As somebody who's spent most of his life masking to get along in society, this track from The Sisters of Mercy's 1990 album Vision Thing has always made me feel seen.

Oh, it's kind of different when you're there
You can lease the peace of mind
You bought a mask, I put it on
You never thought to ask me
If I wear it when you're gone

Best song on that album is Ribbons. That song gives me chills. It’s like a what someone would listen to just before some seriously messed up stuff goes down.

Very surprised it never made it into a movie.

You might like The Warning - When I'm Alone. It's not necessarily about ASD but it is very much about masking neurodivergence. Also it's just a banger in general.

God, I love Sisters of Mercy. More is my favorite song.

That's an interesting song! I just heard the whole thing while reading along to the lyrics. I find an odd complimentary sense of relief that the song is about not being seen, and that makes you feel seen. I love it! I'm actually going to talk to my autism therapy about removing the mask this upcoming session, so I find your post personally relevant. In particular, I would like to know how to remove the mask or parts of the masks while avoiding punishment. Also, what are the respectable parts of my true self and what are inconsiderate parts? There are so many other questions, but I'm excited to engage in this process of self-discovery and freedom.

OP, I have a few questions for you:

Were you thinking about a person in particular not seeing you, or is this meant to be society in general?

Do you want to be seen, or are you happy being unseen?

Are you intentionally trying to be unseen? If so, why?
