That's often the case with war

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

I think it was the U.S. Civil War where disease killed more soldiers than battles.

[-] Coreidan@lemmy.world 14 points 9 months ago

Infection. This was a time where modern medicine didn’t exist. There were no antibiotics.

Amputations and basic injuries often times lead to death due to infection.

In a war torn country getting access to basic medical supplies will essentially lead to the same thing.

One of the elements of the American Civil War that people don't know is, yes, early in the war disease was a big killer, but by the end of the war in the North the American Red Cross was established and soldiers were able to recover from battlefield wounds in safe and sterile hospitals.

A great example is Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain recovery from a gruesome bullet wound at Petersburg. He was hit in the right hip and torn through his Lower body and out the left hip. The division doctor actually recorded him dead, but he was promoted to Brigadier General by Grant as a result. He was evacuated to first a field hospital than five months of recovery at a hospital. He returned to Command before the end of the war and was the General who actually accepted Lee's surrender of his army at Appomattox. He was in charge of the collection of arms and ordered his troops to salute their defeated foe in an act of chivalry.

So while early in the war medical care was terrible, there was a revolution in battlefield medicine by the end of the war.

Also WWI, thanks to the Spanish Flu.

Well it's a good thing hospitals are safe from being a military target. Right guys?

Untreated water and limited water in a place that eats seafood as available. The chances of cholera showing up are high. It's pretty much how you ensure it does.

Colonialism and capitalism is a mental disease.

Another feature working as designed

I dunno Israel is really giving disease a run for its money for the #1 killer award. Though they are helping the competition out by bombing every hospital.

[-] Additional_Prune@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

That's war for ya.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

In figures deemed reliable by the United Nations, Gaza health authorities say more than 15,000 people have been confirmed killed in Israel's bombardment of the narrow enclave, around 40% of them children, with many more feared to be lost under rubble.

Israel has sworn to annihilate Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza, after its gunmen burst through the border killing around 1,200 people and seizing 240 captives on Oct. 7.

"Eventually we will see more people dying from disease than we are even seeing from the bombardment if we are not able to put back (together) this health system," the WHO's Margaret Harris said at a U.N. briefing in Geneva.

She repeated concerns about a rise in infectious diseases, particularly diarrhoea in infants and children, with cases for those aged five and older surging to more than 100 times normal levels by early November.

Citing a U.N. report on the living conditions of displaced residents in northern Gaza, Harris said: "(There are) no medicines, no vaccination activities, no access to safe water and hygiene and no food," she said.

She described the collapse of Al Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza as a "tragedy" and voiced concern about the detention of some of its medical staff by Israeli forces during a WHO evacuation convoy.

The original article contains 458 words, the summary contains 214 words. Saved 53%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

Maybe next time don't start a war in October? Or just don't start a war and actually open diplomac relationships to solve problems.

[-] TheDankHold@kbin.social 10 points 9 months ago

I’m sure those children that make up more than half of the population will think twice before extremists that aren’t them do something.

Then they could live like in the West Bank, where settlers burn your crops and kill you to take your land. Where the territory you control is comparable to the holes in Swiss cheese, surrounded on all sides by Israeli checkpoints and illegal settlements.

Extremists thrive in unstable social environments, the attack in October did not happen in a geopolitical vacuum. The depraved and horrifying conditions inflicted on the Palestinian people by Israel directly fuel the extremists and the current political coalition in power are very much on record as using Hamas to kill international support for Palestinians at large. Not to mention cabinet members like Ben Gvir using bloodthirsty language commonly put solely onto Palestinians.

Maybe Netanyahu and his coalition shouldn’t colonize and repress people? Maybe they should work with moderates as opposed to smuggling cash and resources to terrorists? Just like 9/11 was caused by the US government propping up militias to undermine local authority, the October attack was caused by the Israeli government propping up fundamentalists. In both cases the citizens are convenient shields for these politicians and excuses to enact their own selfish political goals.

[-] blazera@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago

Of course! Why didnt they just ask Israel to stop oppressing them!

[-] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world -3 points 9 months ago

Yes, why didn't they use their words rather than build up an invasion military to massacre innocent civilians?

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 4 points 9 months ago

Because words failed. Multiple times.

[-] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world -4 points 9 months ago

There were few efforts of diplomacy since 2000. Both sides refused to talk. A third party should have been asked for but the Palestinian government decided to invest in missiles instead. At this point Israel should just officially annex Gaza and the Palestinian people will be free to live their lives as Israeli citizens. Plenty of Muslims, Christians, Druze and even Atheists all live together in Israel. They just won't be able to enforce their draconian religious laws on those who don't want to follow them due to Israel being a free nation.

[-] blazera@kbin.social 4 points 9 months ago

At this point Israel should just officially annex Gaza

Israeli diplomacy everyone

[-] YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world -5 points 9 months ago

I personally think both the Palestinian and Israeli governments should be dissolved. I believe both sides are completely in the wrong.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 0 points 9 months ago

At this point Israel should just officially annex Gaza and the Palestinian people will be free to live their lives as Israeli citizens.

This is known as the one state solution, and it's Israel (not Palestinians) who don't want it.

There were few efforts of diplomacy since 2000

I think you misunderstand this conflict. Palestinians would love to actually talk and get this whole thing over with, but it's like the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The belligerent party is the one who decides whether peace talks happen or not. Otherwise it's just "We want peace, Israel" "No", which is what the PNA has been doing for the last 20+ years.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

Or just don’t start a war and actually open diplomac relationships to solve problems.

With... Who exactly? You do know that Israel is the one who created and actively strives to maintain the current status quo, right?
