When I was studying in Australia I took a class that had us go on an Indigenous-led trip and it was eye-opening. It was led by a pair of elders who talked us through the area's history, but also shared personal stories that really contextualized everything we learned in class. The article is right in that there's no one better to teach you about something than someone who's personally lived through it or was affected by it.
