I was going to ask when has it ever made sense to run Windows, but then I noticed how old those logos are. Carry on!:-)

What are the current logos then? Did Linux's change?

    [–] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 57 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

    Windows: Just four blue squares

Apple: Same shape, no colour whatsoever

    Linux: 🏳️‍⚧️

I always think it's so funny that the old stereotypical gray haired man or neckbeard linux user got replaced by the new stereotypical transfem linux user. Now that there's less need to compile our own software there's more time to compile our own genders

    [–] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

My (entirely anecdotal, based on like three human beings who I'm acquainted with) impression is that the Trans-Chick linux user is the neckbeard linux user. She just started HRT in her 30s and lost a lot of weight.

    talk about an unexpected overlap

    [–] LunchMoneyThief@links.hackliberty.org 14 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

If the stereotype is to be believed, why is this, do you think? Why would Linux and open source software attract such a disproportionately high number of transfrem individuals?

And would it be causative or is it or non-causative?

    [–] VinesNFluff@pawb.social 19 points 3 weeks ago

As long as we're being arm-chair-y -- At the core of being into FOSS is the following thought: "Don't tell me what I can and can't do" -- Getting into Linux means going out and exploring, deliberately learning something, and all because you don't want your computer to decide things for you.

.... Transgender individuals are similarly breaking out of the "conventional" and making themselves "outsiders".

It's not causation, but correlation. Anyone who's into FOSS will most definitely not be one for conforming to social standards, and transpeople are not people who are conforming to social standards.

As the meme points out, Linux attracts the autistic crowd, and there have been some studies done that have found a correlation between autism and being transgender. Namely that people who are autistic tend to care less about gendered norms, and therefore are more likely to explore their own gender

    [–] nzeayn@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

yes, and. lets not forget this discussion is happening on lemmy. this place is just autistic as fuck. even those of us autist around here who are straight tend to be the ones who find most other straight people obnoxious. we've self sorted into an audiance that, as another comment hilariously points out. most of us probably know a genx neckbeard linux user who used to be really gumpy. but she's pretty chill and happy now.

    [–] turbowafflz@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I think it's just that computers and programming are a really good escape from the world around you and that attracts anyone who feels in some way trapped or unseen in real life, especially with open source software where you really are free to make your computer into your own customized personal little world where you feel safe.

    [–] exu@feditown.com 8 points 3 weeks ago

Oh, there are still enough neckbeards in Linux. Especially in the YouTuber sphere.
The transfem is an additional route, officially merged when Linus Torvalds confirmed he was woke on Mastodon.

That is odd that your comment has 0 upvotes. The normal default is 1, and it's only been one minute since you said it, so hardly time for someone other than me to have seen it and reacted within that timeframe!? You might have a bot following you around the Fediverse instantly downvoting everything that you do?
