I can't believe there are still 500 people working on it after all these years. The vast majority of people I know who played (myself included) quit after Cataclysm or thereabouts.
Their revenues are much higher per player now than they were back then. That likely explains why such a large dev team for fewer players
Seems to be chugging along just fine, they really made a gold standard game. They are even smart enough to dip into the nostalgia crowd who liked the older versions better with the classic servers. I honestly wouldnt be surprised if it were still an actively developed game in 10 years
They really did. I still remember the first time I logged in — pure magic. I've never felt that way about a game since.
Same here. Maybe it partly has to do with age, but definitely not only. I get super nostalgic about very few things - this game is one of them.
it's so interesting to me, how different subjective perception can be.
I heard a lot about it in school, and eventually shared a friend's account for a bit. loved making a character, started the game and.... meh.
kill 10 wolves, fetch 10 berries, fetch 10 feathers. go to this lifeless dude, walk to this dead settlement. stand around while autoattack happens. I'm sure it opens up, especially when joining up with groups but the beginning didn't hook me whatsoever, sadly
What year did you start playing, though? Back in 2005 the game was a revelation. The mundane gameplay you describe was pretty much how all games worked at the time.
Somewhere between launch and 2007 is the best estimate i can give you. I remember wanting to like it but the passive playstyle was not my thing at all.
I was playing stuff like gothic, morrowind, cs, gta, and a bunch of n64 games at the time
Don't give them that much credit. They just started providing a service (finally) that the private servers were providing. People were asking for vanilla servers from them even when BC was live.
Played since vanilla, took a break in the middle for a while, dragon flight hit the fun of Wow really well compared to the other recent expansions. I'll probably stick around for war within too. They learned a lot of lessons from the mess that was shadow lands.
