Introducing vger.social: A lemmy instance for Voyager supporters ๐
Hey there! Voyager for Lemmy dev here.
As I've been adding more mod and admin feature to Voyager, I've realized that self-hosting my own Lemmy instance may help me improve Lemmy moderation and administration in Voyager.
But I had another thought: Why not open up registration to Voyager supporters? It's a win-win: I get more real-world experience administrating a Lemmy instance, and Voyager supporters get a fun additional benefit!
Introducing https://vger.social :)
Q&A
- Q: Who can sign up? A: Those who donate any amount on a monthly basis, or those who have contributed a few PRs to Voyager
- Q: How do you track donations? A: It's the honor system.
- Q: Will Voyager keep support for other Lemmy instances? A: Of course! Nothing is changing there, vger.social is just another Lemmy instance.
- Q: Will vger.social work with other Lemmy apps? A: Absolutely! It's just a vanilla Lemmy instance.
Why use vger.social
- Guaranteed compatibility with Voyager
- Low user count = snag a better username
- It's well-federated, including https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/piracy
- General purpose instance hosted on US East Coast (potentially a pro or con for you, but faster response times for users in USA than lemmy.world)
- Rules against bigotry, hate and harassment (see sidebar)
- Hopefully better stability against any future influx of Lemmy users, compared to larger Lemmy instances
- Star Trek fans welcome I guess lol
Quick disclaimer
While I hope this instance is around for the long run, it is new, and therefore still experimental. If vger.social does shut down, I will give everyone at least 60 days notice.
Well, I've been meaning to kick some money toward Voyager for awhile now so this sounds like the perfect time to jump in. Just signed up via patreon.
Thanks!! ๐
My pleasure! Thank you for all your hard work, Voyager is excellent. I'm not sure I would've stuck with lemmy if it weren't for this app. Nothing else I've tried out has come close to ticking all the boxes that Voyager does.
