What's heartbreaking about this is that they were supposed to be God's chosen people.

Their god is literally a war god
I vaguely recall watching a documentary once where it was theorized that the various names for God in the bible actually referred to different gods originally which would explain some of the inconsistent behaviours and lessons, if one was a war god and one was more merciful.
Have you read the Bible? Genocide and ethnic cleansing is God's favorite shit.
