If in 1800s Europe Marx lived a "bohemian" lifestyle, it makes me wonder why that word means what it means. Are they calling him avante garde and possibly lazy, as compared to stereotypes of the Roma people?

You are correct. Bohemian = 'gypsy,' Free living, free loving, free from the chains of convention.
