Is there any info on why any of this happened? I know that the board isn’t required to pursue profits, is this the board actually trying to do good and Altman using his image to subvert that?

I don't remember where I read it, but I read that the board was unhappy with altman aggressively pursuing investment to the detriment of the stated mission of AI safety and free-and-open access.

See this is what I’m worried about - MS backing Altman is not a good look imo

I admit, it does sound like propaganda. No doubt the actual reasons were more personal.

Yes, a very vague official statement by the board and that's pretty much it.

is this the board actually trying to do good and Altman ...

The board's official statement made it seem that way. And this article kinda supports it (making it look like MS wants Altman at OpenAI so they have better leverage). But also the chairman of the board stepped down, which is unusual to say the least.

Not only is there more story, but also the story could be completely backwards because we have so little info.
