My grandfather told me he liked Western, but he didn’t like Country. Blew my mind as I’d always just heard it as Country-Western.
Have you ever watched Blues Brothers?

"Oh we have both kinds, country and western."
I remember that but I think I just interpreted as a joke about Country Western more than an indication they used to be distinct genres.
