The Fascinating History of Dice

When we think about games, whether board games or live casino Malaysia, dice are often at the centre of it all. This small, cube-shaped object has rolled its way through history, transcending time, culture, and geography. Dice may seem like a simple tool of entertainment, but their story goes much deeper—an evolution of shape, purpose, and significance. And today, we’re going to delve into the world of dice, uncovering its fascinating history, fun facts, and present-day relevance in gaming, including their role in live casinos.

A Six-Sided Start: The Shape of Dice

Nowadays, the most common type of dice is the basic cube with six sides, each of which is marked with a number of dots, or "pips," ranging from one to six. One quirky fact that you might already know is that on a typical dice, opposite faces always add up to seven. So, no matter which side you're looking at, the sum of the hidden side and the visible one will always total 7. For example, 1 is opposite 6, 2 is opposite 5, and so on. Pretty neat, right?

But dice come in more shapes than you might imagine. While most board games and live casino games use six-sided dice, there are dice with all kinds of configurations. One particularly cool—and incredibly impractical—example is the 120-sided dice, called the Disdyakis Triacontahedron. It’s a mouthful, yes, and while it may sound cool, you probably won’t be using it in your next game of Snakes and Ladders! Over the years, dice have appeared in many different shapes, from pentagons and prisms to spheres.

Rolling Back Through Time: The Origins of Dice

The origins of dice stretch back thousands of years. While it's hard to pinpoint an exact time or place where dice were first created, they're thought to be one of the oldest gaming instruments ever discovered. According to archaeological evidence, dice were originally fashioned from animal ankle bones, such as tusks and hooves. Early dice weren’t made for entertainment but were used in spiritual practices, as a form of divination to predict the future.

The idea that the outcome of a dice roll was controlled by supernatural forces persisted for centuries. People believed that the way the dice landed was determined by gods or mystical energies. When scientists like as Galileo introduced the concepts of probability and randomness in the 16th century, this idea started to shift. These ideas revolutionized how people viewed games of chance, shifting the perception of dice from tools of fate to instruments of mathematical probability.

The Oldest Dice in History

The earliest physical evidence of dice was uncovered at the archaeological site known as the Burnt City in south-eastern Iran. These dice, which date from between 2800 and 2500 BC, were used to play a game called Senet, which was a lot like backgammon. This discovery offers a glimpse into just how long dice have been used in human culture, not just for gaming but also as tools of fortune-telling and divination. As time passed, dice became more prevalent across different civilizations and regions.

Dice Through the Ages: Ancient Cultures and Dice Games

Different cultures throughout history have embraced dice in their unique ways. For instance, the Ancient Greeks had a game called Knucklebones, where players would use the small bones of animals to play. It was a popular game that evolved into modern dice games.

In Ancient Rome, gambling with dice became an infamous pastime, despite being illegal for much of Roman history. Roman soldiers, nobles, and even emperors were known to gamble with dice, sometimes staking vast fortunes. The risk and reward element made dice irresistible. The Romans primarily used four-sided and six-sided dice in their gambling activities.

Dice in the Modern Day

Fast forward to today, and dice have become a ubiquitous part of modern gaming. Whether you're playing a classic board game like Monopoly, strategizing over a game of Yahtzee, or enjoying a thrilling game of craps in a casino, dice are everywhere. In fact, dice have become so integral to gaming that it’s hard to imagine a world without them.

In casinos, the most played dice game is called craps, where players can wager on the result of one roll or several rolls. But that’s not the only game you can enjoy with dice in a live casino Malaysia. There are several variations of dice games, such as Klondike, which uses five dice, or other regional favourites that vary depending on where you are in the world.

Outside of casinos, dice are critical to many beloved board games. Imagine trying to play Monopoly without them! The dice serve as your gateway to movement around the board, with the roll determining how far you can go and what fate awaits you. And then there's Yahtzee, a traditional game in which scoring various combinations is determined only by rolling dice. Dice also play a major role in tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, where multiple-sided dice (not just six-sided) are rolled to determine outcomes in the game.

Fun Facts About Dice

What’s an article about dice without a few fun facts to throw into the mix? Here are some interesting titbits you may not have known about your favourite gaming tool:

  • The word dice comes from the Latin word datum, meaning “something which is given or played,” and evolved from the Old French term dé.
  • The world’s smallest dice were created by a Japanese company, Iriso Seimetsu Co. These dice measure an astonishing 0.3 x 0.3 x 0.3 mm. Just imagine trying to roll one of these without losing it!
  • The most expensive dice ever sold went for a jaw-dropping £13,583. This 20-sided die was made from rare Roman glass and featured unique symbols on each face.
  • Henry VIII, the notorious King of England, was a huge fan of dice games. It’s said that he once lost a game that cost him the bells of St. Paul’s Church in London.
  • The little dots on the faces of dice are called "pips."

From Ancient Artifacts to Modern Gaming Marvels

Dice have been around for thousands of years, and their journey is far from over. From being carved out of animal bones to being used as tools of fate, to their integral role in modern-day board games and live casinos, dice have rolled through human history, leaving a trail of fascination in their wake.

For anyone who enjoys playing dice games, especially in a live casino setting, there’s no doubt that these little cubes have an enduring appeal. They offer an element of randomness, excitement, and skill that keeps players coming back for more. Whether you’re rolling dice for fun with friends or placing bets in the fast-paced world of live casino Malaysia, dice have a unique way of making every game more thrilling.

So, next time you pick up a pair of dice, remember that you’re holding a piece of history in your hands—a game that has travelled through time, evolving but always retaining that thrilling element of unpredictability.

Tune in on October 19.

As the narrator for Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Lenval Brown recorded 350,000 words of dialogue. His warm, crackling tone is one you'll associate with Disco Elysium forever after playing it, though he's also popped up elsewhere—like in retro shooter Ultrakill, city builder Republic of Pirates, and as the host of our own documentary series, Tales from the Hard Drive.

Next he'll be playing the RPG he's most famous for as a charity fundraiser, "where he will play the game and talk about his experience as a voice actor for Disco Elysium." It'll be part of Workshops 4 Gaza, a series of benefits where writers, artists, and teachers offer online courses in return for donations to Palestinians in Gaza.

To register for Voice of the Narrator: A Disco Elysium livestream, you'll need to donate to a gofundme to help Dr. Alaa Abu Musa and his family evacuate the Gaza Strip. (Suggested donations are $US60.) Then fill out the registration form linked at the Workshops 4 Gaza event page. The livestream will take place on October 19, from 3–5pm EST.

In your opinion, what games released in the 2020s decade (the current one) will be forgotten (i.e. no longer talked about, or known) 20 years from now?

Remember, every time you read about 10, or 100, or 1000 layoffs in the video game industry, they're not cold statistics. Every one of those figures is a person. A life that has been upended, with enormous consequences for not just the individuals directly involved but their family and friends. Every single person affected by layoffs and departures has their own story to tell, their own history in the business and their own motivations for pursuing whatever comes next.

After this year's TI, Dota 2 is now the game with the fifth-most simultaneous viewers. Have in mind, that League of Legends and Mobile Legends haven't had their biggest tournaments yet.

I personally have a huge backlog of games I'm happily playing through on the deck. And, having been burnt a few times (Cyberpunk, No Mans Sky ..), I very rarely buy new full priced games anyway (better to wait for a discount and some patches!)

But according to this rather clickbate article ...

In the last month alone, we’ve seen three disappointing examples of games that are too demanding for the Deck. Star Wars Outlaws is unplayable on Low settings, even with FSR set to “Ultra Performance.” Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 can’t reach a steady 30fps at the lowest quality setting. And based on the demo, Final Fantasy 16 is unplayable without FSR and Frame Generation, and afflicted with stuttering and horrible frame pacing with those scaling features enabled.

Everything I know about Larian tells me that they did not try very hard to hide it. They had to for liability and contractual obligations, I am sure, but they didn't try very hard to hide it.

In a Q&A session that Tom's Hardware attended at IFA 2024, AMD revealed that the next generation of its Ryzen handheld gaming processor, AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, will arrive early next year. The Z2 Extreme is the successor to AMD’s current Z1 Extreme, which powers devices like the ROG Ally X and Legion Go.

One AMD representative said, “So, we’ve our Z1 Extreme and Z1 in market today, right? Z2 is in the works. We’re working with a number of partners across the OEM ecosystem on that, and it will be coming to market probably in the early part of 2025.”
