There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

As someone in the US it’s so easy to see so many depressing issues from the ravages of capitalism, to war, imperialism, and genocide. How can one care about these issues and hope for change without allowing themselves to be affected mentally?

I’ve been considering this for the past week, connecting it with Buddhist compassion towards the world and a need for mindfulness. But it’s so easy to fall into emotionlessness.

I’ve also thought through the world has always had issues and though some are getting much worse some are getting better.

I have gone to counseling before but they just make it an individual problem when it’s the world.

Edit: doesn’t have to be US centric. Just I’m writing from that pov

I am using a liquid detergent and I use exactly the half of the detergent they say I should use. If a the washing machine requires 1 cup, I do half. Mostly because I don't trust the company to put me over their interests.

Now, what will happen? Will my clothes end up staying dirty? Will it not remove stains which a full cup would have removed? Will surfexcel kidnap me and torture me for not obeying their commands? Help meeee!!

I recently stumbled upon Lemmy from SimpleX github. This is my first interaction.

Why Lemmy? It seems to be an alternative to Reddit, but what sets it apart? I've explored, participated and built nodes in Nostr, which positions itself as a Twitter alternative, so I’m curious about what makes Lemmy unique and what it needs to succeed?

Who Lemmy? Like Nostr, the community here seems to define the platform. Without algorithms to shape the narrative, the vibe is driven by its users—radicals, dreamers, and wayfarers. Is that a fair read? Who else calls Lemmy home?

How Lemmy? What’s the vision here? How does Lemmy aim to change the social media landscape? Decentralization is intriguing, but what’s the endgame? Escape from algorithms is exciting but from what I see raw and unfilters humans have chaotic thoughts.

Where Lemmy? Where's the Lemmy Lobby? When folks onboard where do they go to connect? The communities Ive checked seem to have a variation of really old posts and infrequent posts. Are we that early or is this platform suffering from slow growth?

What's your perspective on the success of decentralized social media?

Am I the only one who struggles with online shopping? Like with measurements for example, I don't know what there talking about or if the clothes will be the right size. How does everyone else get around this?

I ask because I feel I need to save some money in the oncoming months. Currently, I pay over $76 for 100MBps/1000GB cap. And I don't think it's a bad deal, but they're going to be hiking it up to $90+ by next October and I feel it is not worth that. But I also need to save money too.

What is the difference between 55MB and 100MB when it comes to speed? The cap for the 55MBps plan is 350GB and I tried asking if that could be altered but the ISP says they can't. This plan will cost me $30 a month.

All I ever do anymore is just stream YouTube, sometimes Hulu/Netflix/Tubi. Occasionally I'll download a game or two, multiplayer gaming is non-existent.

Hi, i have a community which I post everyday, the followers begun to grow until they seem to hit a ceiling for some unknown reason, the last week the number is fluctuating from 149 to 155 and somewhere in between those numbers, so what is really happening with Lemmy?! It's full of bots?

We're fucked. It's as simple as that. The world has fully entered into a somehow unprecedented age of corporatocracy and the future, at least the near future, is nothing but war and economic collapse. All of it, puppeteered by the richest of the rich, who have bought their way into power.

Beyond society as a whole, we all have our personal problems. We wouldn't be here otherwise. I can't speak for you, but I'm poor, dougly and mentally ill with no hope of ever finding love. My only purpose in society is to avoid the light and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product until I die alone and unloved. All I ever wanted was a girl to hug and a life to call my own, but I'll never achieve that. What exactly is the incentive to not go postal?

Let's be honest here: None of us are going rogue. We aren't going to grab a gun and start killing the worst of the worst, the people who have destroyed our lives and or the lives of millions, the people who have benefitted from the creation of a soulless society, the people who ruined our lives. We are cowards. We can't do it, I certainly know I can't. It's best not to kid ourselves here.

But you've thought about it, haven't you? We all have, right? Of making an elaborate plan to slaughter the most despicable of individuals, making our escape with years of preperation, and fleeing to the Yukon, never to be caught? Am I the only one? Haven't you thought this?

Hi folks, hope all are well today!

Is there a Lemmy community (or dare I say Reddit sub) that talks about finding locations from photos without meta/EXIF data?

I know there are groups that do this sort of thing for “fun”, so I thought I would ask here first… before doing random internet searches.

I have photo of a person in a location but my “tracking skills” are terrible. Best I can do is determine the country the photo was taken in.

My intent is to keep myself safe, I am not doing anything nefarious!! Just throwing that out there folks 🙂

Appreciate any and all feedback/responses. Have a great day all!

UPDATE 12/20/2024: I was able to very the info I needed without using any photos. However, I do appreciate all the responses. Maybe this post will help others.

Seems like established technology with common metals fabricating a simple mechanism. What differentiates a relatively inexpensive, contractor-grade faucet from one that costs anywhere from double to 10x the price?

I returned to work from office a while back and it was really hard to keep up my social energy high enough. First day I did ok with the excitement of meeting new people aiding me but it was downhill ever since. Showing up to work is itself a huge chore, and the societal obligation to socialise with people at the workplace all the time, is even bigger chore.

For more context, I only used to maintain very small circle of people I talk to in my uni and college days. Ignoring others was kinda ok at that time but doesn't seem like so here in corporate space.

Don't get me wrong, I want to be more free and connect with more people and have bigger circles, I want to improve my social skills too. But at the same time, it very taxing and almost makes me to shut off myself and avoid going to places where people who recognise me.

Thinking of a robot which can draw basic shapes upon command. Ideally, a voice command, but if that's too complex, we can start off with a different type of command. I'm a python programmer, but have zero experience with adruino and the like. Please give me some advice to help me get started.

Hi lemmy. One time I was on YouTube and I wanted to learn more about my latest interest, neuroscience, so I entered into the search bar "Neuroscience" and every single result was from self help gurus.

Oftentimes, I will attempt to find information for something im curious about. More often then not, my search will be slowed by thousands of shitty SEO optimized/self-help guru made/absolutely utterly useless "Top 10 Things to so for X" content. This happens on pretty much every large platform I have ever searched on ever.

have gotten better at googling and searching for the results I want(searching "neuroscience lecture" instead of "neuroscience") But I can only improve my googling skills so much, so that's why I wanted to ask a few questions:

  1. How do I search the internet/google for blogs/forums/media from experts easily? Is there a chrome extension to remove SEO overoptimized results? Do I need to use a different search engine?

  2. Are there any approaches I can take that apply to more then just google?

I can't think of any. The current oil reserve is supposed to be used in the case of another oil embargo. But its actual use is to lower gas prices when the administration in power needs a political win.

I actually think the purpose of a Bitcoin reserve is to temporarily increase the price so tech-bros (re: Elon) can sell at a massive profit. Then buy back at a much lower price. It's just a way to indirectly transfer federal dollars into administration pockets.

I can't find any reason for the government to buy crypto and hold it in reserve.

Take a guess.

I write short stories and poetry. I've posted here on Lemmy a bit. I'd like to start publishing/ posting.

I'm afraid medium/ substack needs a lot of "publicity" and requires me to have social media accounts to promote it.

What other options are there? Any publications I can submit to? And are substack and medium any good?

I am new to Lemmy and I've been using Reddit for many years. I have subscribed to a large number of subreddits. is there any tool available that can suggest me all the lemmy communities alternative to all the subreddit I am subscribed to?

Today at work I was flipping some burgers as usual when a coworker yelled out to me "how to spell occupation" for some reason. She shouldn't have even been on her phone and I don't know why she asked me of all people to spell 'occupation' and why she needed to use that word in the first place is beyond me but that's not important.

I tried to sound it out I just didn't know how to spell it. There were like a bunch of other people they were all watching. I just broke down in tears then and there and ran to the bathroom. It was so embarrassing. I left like 3 hours early as I just couldn't take being there anymore. I can't stop thinking about it. I made myself look so stupid in front of everyone. I know I have to go back there soon but I can't handle the humiliation and + I'm going to be in trouble with the boss for leaving early. I really don't know what to do.

Update: I told my boss that somebody asked how to spell something and I didn't know how to so I got emotional and left. He was understanding but told me never to do it again. Seems like everything is ok, right? Well, he asked me who was on her phone and I told him so now I think that girl got into trouble and now my coworkers are mad at me for being a snitch. FUCK. MY. LIFE.

I feel like the one I would choose Xolotl. I am someone with has made few friends but who stands up for them all and who has been durable in doing so, and to this end have found myself opposing newly appointed leadership almost to the death.

I just make faces with mine, do stupid things, make a little dance and generally act stupid. I talk to them a little but never anything serious. Most days, other than my wife, they're the only individual I get to share a laugh with in person.

Whatever you say or do ... say hi to them for me.
