Hey everyone, I'm new to Lemmy and just starting to figure this site out. I mainly moved here because of the censorship on Reddit where they didn't publish posts that included the slightest word not allowed by their filter and they removed/blocked lots of content. I wonder if it will be somewhat better here (on the official site it says "Censorship resistant - By hosting your own server, you can be in full control of your content.").

The weird thing I saw with Lemmy was when I wanted to sign-up on the "lemmy.ml" server instance that according to the official Lemmy Servers listing page is a "A community of privacy and FOSS enthusiasts, run by Lemmy’s developers".

So I thought I try that one when it's from Lemmy's own developers. When I wanted to sign-up it required an application that you needed to fill out with one of the requirements being having to copy a sentence from the link provided which links to some article called "The Principles of Communism" which I thought was very odd for a site to do. I've never seen a site like this promoting some ideology that directly where it's part of the sign-up process to almost pledge to some political or religious ideology.

This seemed very sketchy to me. Does anyone know something about this?

I need advice because I’m scared lol.

Do you keep everything in "downloads" or have file trees 100 folders deep?

Dial-Up internet. Unfortunately, it's still here because the ISPs continue to fail to deliver on the promise of expanding broadband over and over.

And because of that, it's no wonder internet isn't expanded to everywhere in the country of USA.

Today I'm donating my streaming sticks. I got a ONN brand 2k one I bought for 15 and I got an Amazon Firestick 4K I got for $3 from a thrift store because they didn't know what it was.

And I love the concept of stream sticks, I really do. Too fucking bad that corporate interests got in the way and now everything has to have a bundle of ads at every damn turn. Not even some of the things I'm subscribed to is free from ads because this is the future apparently, we're here.

Shame because I don't want to let these go and even if I were to subscribe to Netflix's ad-free subscription, that's only one source. Why do that when I can just grab a long HDMI cable, plug it into my desktop and to my TV and I can watch everything that's there, without ads because of the extensions I use to block ads.

I'm still quite lost when it comes to the fediverse. I created an account on the main instance, however as I understood more how it works, it seems like certain instances that interest me are "defederated" from this instance, and vice versa. So now I want to move my account to be able to see those instances, however I want to keep my follows and my posts I have on this instance. Is that possible? I read that fediverse is resistant to censorship in this regard, so there must be something I'm missing here.

Some of these things may sound a little exaggerated, but I'm not going to put it pass anyone considering who we're going to be dealing with in these 4 years.

I'm expecting nutrition labels to be poorly regulated and to be informationally false or fabricated. Because we'll have health "experts" who don't care about people's health.

There'll be a lot of sissy slapping among the rich who're fighting moreso over their ideas in what the best course of action that'll benefit them, than it is to benefit country.

Domestic dispute cases will more likely be thrown out or not focused on because this country has shown as to how many misogynists and incels that there are.

I was playing Half-Life 2 recently and for some reason, the vibes of that game reflected the vibes that we're going to be facing. While not exactly, it'll be a similar atmosphere, where we'll be clinging to whatever escapism outlet that we can find to ignore it all.

(This is USA...for the people who're like "DUHHHHH")

I would rather know a little, honestly. Because what pisses me off about information today is that I don't really know who's value I am to take and even be skeptical towards. So I'd rather know little.

If the price gouging of 2020 and everything following that too. If the housing market crashes didn't budge anyone. If the abundance of so many subscription services didn't. If poorly chosen representatives didn't.

If just the high cost of simply living life isn't doing anything.

Then what the fuck will anymore?

Pretty much the title. I certainly believe Trump, Maga, the Military, and the Police will, sooner or later, probably sooner, get around to at least attempting to deanonymize and round up online antifascists and leftists and imprison them. How organized and effective that attempt is I am less sure of.

To be very transparent, this is something I'm pretty sure I'd be on the hook for. I have a long log of anti trump, antifascist, left sentiments, and am 75% sure I'll be disappeared at some point in the next 4 years as I have no plans of shutting up. The only reason I'm not 100% sure is because of how expensive it would be. But hey, maybe it's less expensive than potentially losing power? So I don't know.

Never? Not likely? Maybe? Very? Extremely? Definitely?

Thoughts?

Seriously I see these posts all the time about people who have a co-worker who steals food so they make gross food to 'get back at them' cause HR doesn't do anything.

Legit question but how do you not just freak out and yell at the person? If a co-worker stole my food the 1st time I'd yell at them and curse them out, the 2nd time I'd threaten to shove the food in their fat face next time I see it happen. If HR didn't do anything I'd threaten to quit and sue if they claimed I don't get EI because it's a toxic work environment.

I just don't get how people are so passive when co-workers literally steal from them? I'd be fucking livid.

In the United States, I'd probably name Oregon City, the famous end of the Oregon Trail and the first city founded west of the Rocky Mountains during the pioneer era. Its population is only 37,000.

Hey, I've been pondering the Dead Internet Theory (DIT) lately and how it might impact society. For those unfamiliar, the DIT suggests that the internet has been mostly abandoned and that the content we see today is generated by AI and curated by large corporations. While this theory might sound far-fetched, I've noticed a significant portion of the content in my feeds appears to be AI-generated, making it difficult to distinguish between human-generated and AI-generated content.

As someone who was initially excited about the prospect of having an AI assistant, I'm now concerned about the potential for AI to be used to brainwash people and extract money from them. I can't help but wonder if most people will even notice or care, as they continue to use social media and other online platforms, oblivious to the fact that they're being gaslighted into believing what the companies that own the AI want them to believe.

With this in mind, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the DIT and how it might affect society. Do you think it's a real possibility, or is it just a conspiracy theory? How do you think it will impact the way we use the internet, and what can we do to protect ourselves from the potential negative effects of AI-generated content?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts on this topic!

Just a thought I had, like what can a ten year old do(besides mass murder & accidents) that messes up their life so badly that it is unrecoverable?

It has to be something that is self inflicted and not something that is the cause of others around them.

I had a Lyft ride today where the driver had a check engine light on, ran 3 stop signs at full speed, and had their high beams on the entire time. I tipped him well.

My quandary is should I report this person as a terrible driver, or give them a pass because we're all struggling to make the ends meet? This was in a pretty dense neighborhood.

Checkmate, Chuck. 👑

Edit: Given the number of downvotes I'm getting, I'm guessing a lot of people have just learned that they've been pronouncing St. John wrong. Don't beat yourselves up. It's not like it's a terribly common name.
