Hey!

I'm a Greek that's been very much interested in the Armenian culture for a while now, and I was wondering (and I'm not sure if this is the right word for what I mean to express) about what sort of casual and non-race/ethnicity/sexuality-related prejudices exist within the Armenian culture. I'll add a few examples from my own culture below, so I can specify what it is that I'm curious about:

  1. When your eye is twitching, you'll probably see someone that you haven't seen in a long time.
  2. If you're ticklish, you're a jealous person.
  3. If you step on feces, you'll be getting money.
  4. Seeing a baby in your dream means you're going to face tragedy in real life.
  5. If your nose is itchy, you're going to get beat up.

The list goes on and on, of course, but that's basically what I'm curious about. I've noticed a lot of overlap when it comes to such 'prejudices' in different cultures over the years, so I'm curious what Armenia's take on this topic is.

Accepting any and all kinds of 'beliefs', as long as they're not of an offensive nature.

45,000 taxi drivers are generating receipts and paying taxes now, after a new law went into effect in September

45,000 taxi drivers are using centralized platforms that calculate and generate receipts for them.

110 individuals, not using centralized platforms and not working for any company, have registered and are using the government's tax app to insert the fare manually after each ride. They have generated 3,000 digital receipts worth ֏3M since September.

Some individual drivers are not as savvy with phone apps so they want a more simplified approach: send me a bill, I go to the bank and pay it, and I receive the right to drive a full month [without further payments].

GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL: This has been a successful project so far. 45,000 people, who were completely "invisible" to the tax agency in the past, are currently registered through platforms and will pay taxes for the rides totaling ֏12B so far.

Kadyrov's foe survives an assassination attempt in Moscow, days after Kadyrov revealed an alleged plot to assassinate him after a dispute that began with the attempted takeover of a large Russian business

Context in October 10 news.

Several shots were fired at Sherip Alikhadzhiev yesterday. He was hospitalized and survived.

He was an ally of Ramzan Kadyrov's late father Ahmad Kadyrov, and a former government official in Chechnya. After Ahmad's death, he became a government official in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia, while the new president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, called him a "criminal".

It is unclear whether the assassination attempt was related to the recent surge in inter-ethnic tensions between the Chechen and Ingush peoples, who have a long history of feuding, following a failed Chechen-led raid on the Moscow headquarters of Russia’s biggest online retailer Wildberries, in which two Ingush security guards were killed

This may be stupid question, but as foreigner I am curious. What happened to flats, houses of people who fled from Artsakh after Azerbaijan takeover? Did Azeris in essence "nationalize" it? Did they distributed it for free to their own population?

Due to how Azeris are, I don't expect them to give anything to Armenian refugees as counter value for their property, neither I expect that they leave the flats or houses vacant. Has Armenian or any other government helped said refugees or not settling in the Armenia?

Thanks

Armenia overtakes Azerbaijan and Iran with GDP per capita at purchasing power parity (GDP-PPP): Global Finance article from May 2024

only when taking into account inflation rates and the cost of local goods and services can we get a more accurate picture of a nation’s average standard of living: the resulting figure is what is called purchasing power parity (PPP)

Countries by GDP-PPP per capita ($):

(1) Luxemburg $143,743

(51) Turkey $43,921

(77) Georgia $25,248

(82) Armenia $21,746

(83) Iran $21,220

(93) Azerbaijan $19,328

(190) South Sudan $455

...

Should we then automatically assume that in nations where PPP is particularly high the overall population is visibly better off than in most other places in the world? Not quite. We are dealing with averages and within each country structural inequalities can easily swing the balance in favor of those who are already advantaged.

Armenia's budget revenues have doubled since 2017: IRS chief Badassian

2017 budget revenue: ֏1.238T

2024 budget revenue: ֏2.723T

BADASSIAN: This figure has been achieved without a significant increase in the tax burden. It is mainly thanks to economic growth and the reduction of the shadow economy.

I disagree with allegations that Armenia has high tax rates and that because of this many big businesses use loopholes to evade taxes. All opportunities and conditions for doing business have been created in Armenia. It is possible to pay taxes faithfully and be profitable. //

source,

taxi drivers are starting to register to pay taxes, which will allow them to take advantage of various benefits now or in the future

As you recall, the government made it "mandatory" starting in September for taxi drivers to pay taxes. It was already mandatory, but they made it easier to pay taxes and "reminded" that it was mandatory.

Drivers who work for major taxi apps aren't required to go through lengthy steps to pay taxes. Their employers are already automatically calculating and reporting taxi trips worth billions of drams, according to IRS chief Badassian.

As for individual taxi drivers, they are required to insert the fare amount into the tax authority's app after each ride to generate a digital record; the tax rate is ~2% for now. Some 30 individual drivers have already been registered in the last 10 days (unclear how many were registered in September).

BADASSIAN: We will regularly remind individual taxi drivers about the requirement. We are not going to resort to harsh administration. We will implement more programs aimed at increasing discipline voluntarily. We will also explain the importance of paying taxes, gradually encouraging voluntary registration. //

Armenians are showing heightened interest in electric vehicles

Every year Armenians can import 8,000 EVs without paying customs duties. 7,400 slots are available to individuals and legal entities, while 600 are reserved for dealers or special orders.

In previous years, the number of imported EVs "did not even come close to the quota", said the Economy Minister Papoyan, but this year they have already imported all 7,400 units: 71% by individuals and 29% by legal entities.

Dealers are showing less interest in EVs, so today the Government made a decision to open up the 600 reserved slots so individuals can use them on a "first come, first serve" basis.

PASHINYAN (back from Moscow alive): This program has existed since 2019 and this is the first time we are facing this quota shortage. It's a good thing. I'd like to remind you that a few years ago we made a decision to exempt imported EVs from VAT.

Normally you would pay a 20% VAT [to Armenia], plus a 15% customs fee [to EAEU bloc]. We abolished the VAT for EVs, and coupled with EAEU's decision to grant customs waivers, today you can import 8,000 without a customs fee.

After this 8,000 quota is expended, you will pay a customs fee, but still no VAT. So you still have favorable conditions to import EVs regardless.

Lately, I've been noticing more and more gas stations in Yerevan and highways with electric chargers for EVs. These charges are often near cafes and businesses so people can spend time while the car is charging. This should be good for local businesses, too.

Most likely, starting next year, only new-ish EVs will qualify for quota. We don't want to incentivize the import of outdated EVs [with dangerous batteries that are expensive to dispose of]. //

DEPUTY PM MHER: Not only do we have VAT and customs waivers, but Armenia is among the few countries that have not imposed a utilization [disposal?] fee. But I think this process is much more expensive for EVs [because of dangerous battery disposal], so we might need to impose it.

[Get your Teslas now while you still can.] It's going to become a lot more difficult to receive customs-free quotas from EAEU in the future because Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan plan to assemble EVs locally. //

FINANCE MINISTER: We plan to implement property tax reforms for EVs. As you know, the size of property tax depends on the horsepower of the vehicle, and in the case of EVs this is "unfair", argue the EV supporters. We are conducting an analysis to draft a fair property tax calculation system. We will propose a new system later this year.

PASHINYAN: Very well, so right now both EVs and combustion engine vehicles pay [property] tax based on the horsepower? hahaha, a horse is still a horse hahaha.

Freedom House presents evidence of Yugoslavia-style ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh by the Azerbaijani regime

Freedom House presented evidence from its fact-finding mission about Nagorno-Karabakh, which concluded that the forced displacement of ethnic Armenians was intentionally coordinated and committed by the Azerbaijani government.

The Freedom House called the attention of the OSCE ODIHR and participating States to the treatment of ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, whereby they were intentionally subjected to years of regular attacks, intimidation, deprivation of basic rights, and ultimately forced displacement by the Azerbaijani state in September 2023.

these conclusions are the result of an intensive international fact-finding effort

...

This factfinding, which included hundreds of witness interviews and analysis of open-source data, concludes that the Azerbaijani state acted upon a comprehensive, methodically implemented strategy to empty Nagorno-Karabakh of its ethnic Armenian population and historical and cultural presence

...

the documented actions of the Azerbaijani state meet the criteria for ethnic cleansing as understood in the context of the UN Commission of Experts’ analysis on IHL violations in the former Yugoslavia

...

We have documented extrajudicial executions, torture, arbitrary arrests and detention, restrictions on the access to food and life-saving medication, forcible removal, displacement and deportation of civilian population, deliberate military attacks or threats of attacks on civilians and civilian areas, and wanton destruction of property

...

The fact-finding mission has determined that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that these practices constitute crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, including Article 7 (crimes against humanity), and Article 8 (war crimes), and align with the definition of deportation or forcible transfer of population

... Freedom House calls on OSCE states to

• Invoke the Moscow Mechanism to investigate violations committed against ethnic Armenians.

• Advocate within the UN Human Rights Council for the establishment of a country mechanism and a Special Procedure on the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.

• Support international efforts to prosecute crimes against humanity and war crimes committed against the ethnic Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh.

... Freedom House calls on the Government of Azerbaijan to

• Provide secure access to Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh to visit their homes and collect their belongings, as well as to uphold the right to return for Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh under international observations.

• Provide access to international monitoring initiatives to investigate the state of cultural monuments in Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories.

• Abstain from violence-inducing rhetoric against Armenians.

pro-Russian opposition forces led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan demand war crime charges against Prime Minister Pashinyan for "aiding the genocide in Nagorno-Karabakh"

Bagrat, ARF, and hundreds of followers gathered in front of the prosecutor's office in Yerevan on Wednesday and demanded criminal charges to be filed against Pashinyan for "abetting" the genocide in Nagorno-Karabakh.

... divisions continue to grow within Bagrat's camp

Regular readers of Transcaucasian Telegraph may recall that Bagrat recently lost the support of several factions, was publicly criticized by some opposition media outlets for his handling of anti-Pashinyan protests, while his friend and mentor Archbishop Ajapahyan publicly criticized him for cozying up to ex-leaders Robert Kocharyan and Serj Sargsyan who are "toxic" and "alienate" possible supporters.

During the Wednesday rally in front of the prosecutor's office, Bagrat was confronted with more uncomfortable questions:

REPORTER: Srbazan, you feel bad when the pro-government figures disrespect the clergymen by not using their church titles. But what is the difference between the government and opposition figures doing the same? We saw that the people standing next to you, Garnik Isagulyan, who describes himself as a supporter of Kocharyan, criticized Archbishop Ajapahyan and [basically called Ajapahyan an ungrateful man because Kocharyan is not the one attacking the church, so why would Ajapahyan trashtalk Kocharyan and urge him to leave politics].

BAGRAT: [tells people to watch his earlier videos, a common response he uses to avoid tough questions] I again urge people to exercise decency.

REPORTER: Have Kocharyan and Serj obstructed [harmed] your movement in any shape or form?

BAGRAT: No one has and no one can obstruct our movement.

REPORTER: If the two ex-leaders announce their exit from politics, will that help you?

BAGRAT: Please, contact their offices and ask them. You are taking this in the wrong direction. From day one, our only target is Pashinyan, the threat to Armenia. We must remove Pashinyan to liberate Armenia's statehood. // [Bagrat wants "Real Armenia" to win? 🤔 surprising]

As you know from the October 8 telegraph, Russian airport authorities blocked Lfik from entering Russia. He was forced to fly back.

According to an undisclosed source of a pro-Russian opposition media outlet in Armenia, there may be two reasons why Lfik was blocked:

(1) Lfik allegedly has or had business ties with a Sochi-based businessman named Ruben Tatulyan, aka Robson. The latter is wanted by Russian authorities for allegedly embezzling billions of rubles during construction projects.

(2) Russia has drafted a list of Armenian business owners who help the Pashinyan administration. Their entry to Russia will be blocked.

PHOTO: did Vladimir Putin punch Nikol Pashinyan in the face?

This is a photo of PM Pashinyan during his trip to Moscow. His left cheek appears to have a giant greenish mark, which looks like a bruise.

Hi all, I’ve been researching Armenia and it’s top on the list of my travel bucket list.

I really like travelling alone, the solitude, ability to wander around and explore, eat local food, stuff like that.

Just wondering if this is normal and commonly done there? Not just in terms of safety, but even if it’ll be weird or awkward?

Thank you!

26yo Christian here who's been reading and researching about Armenian history, culture, and people since 2021. I have visited a few Armenian places too. I am doing this as a passion and genuine interest to learn more about Armenia, and not as part of any academic project.

Would any Armenian be interested in exchanging messages over Reddit and giving me a deep insight about Armenia?
