A brief history of Megaupload and its controversial founder Kim Dotcom. Find out how a teenage hacker built one of the largest websites in the world, which was eventually seized by the FBI for piracy.

It feels dirty to agree with an ISP on something. But even the worst corporations are on the right side of something from time to time I suppose.

Ahoy mateys.

So I tripped and accidentally installed the leak of Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 and then kept tripping (really fumbling here) and nearly started the game several times.

So here's a list of a number of the accidents that have befallen me:

  • Whoopsie! I clicked on launcher_pc_retail, started up the server (set to hub_battle_barge.pak), and hit "start" on Client A. Saw the Ultramarines logo in the corner, loaded a while, got stuck, went nowhere. Tried again on Client B, no dice.
  • Oops! I put the SM2 folder inside another folder in my C: drive, as I'd seen someone recommend online.
  • Butter fingers! I hit the gear icon and clicked "load to main menu." Tried Client A and B again. I saw the opening logos and copyright but then got a crash. "Unhandled exception happened."

No callstack presented

Click "Resolve callstack" button to show callstack

'Send' and 'Save' always resolve callstack

Warning! Resolving takes long time (around 30 seconds)

Set 'ShowErrors.AssertCallstackOnDemand' to 'false' in config if you want an old behavior

I don't really know what any of that means. The config file in the same directory as the launcher doesn't have a parameter with that name and I'm not sure where I'd have to put it in myself.

  • Damn it, not again! I tried opening the MagnusClientRetail launcher in client_pc/root/bin/pc, which launched directly into the logos and copyright, and then crashed again with the same aforementioned message.

I'm wondering, hypothetically, how the game might launch properly if I were to have another accident. My PC ain't so shoddy, though I'm no tech savvy guy:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz 4.10 GHz

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

RAM: 16 GB

Would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

[Yes, I'm aware that this kind of "SWIM"-style obfuscating of me doing piracy doesn't make me less legally-liable, just trying to be "amusing" I guess]

Kim Dotcom, who is facing criminal charges relating to the defunct file-sharing website Megaupload, is to be extradited to the US, the New Zealand justice minister has said.

German-born Dotcom has New Zealand residency and has been fighting extradition to the US since 2012 following an FBI-ordered raid on his Auckland mansion.

The justice minister, Paul Goldsmith, had signed an extradition order for Dotcom, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

“I considered all of the information carefully, and have decided that Mr Dotcom should be surrendered to the US to face trial,” Goldsmith said in a statement.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Dotcom said: “The obedient US colony in the South Pacific just decided to extradite me for what users uploaded to Megaupload,” in what appears to be a reference to the extradition order.

I just downloaded stremio and added torrentio to it for my sister. Now I've never used stremio myself. Is there any potential issue of doing so without db?

ACCUMULATED RELEASE SIZE FOR July 2024

From the 55.266 scene releases, only 12.799 of them had file + size information.

They total to: 1.129,44 TB (1.184.305.751 MB) in 222 thousand files (222.200).

No idea about the size of the missing information, so the real value should be much higher.

This recent YouTube video from LTT on the topic of ripping DVDs and Blu-rays has got me wondering:

I'm not a big fan of stores, hoarding physical stuff and DVDs and Blu-rays, but I do love owning my stuff digitally and supporting the artists. Is there a service that let's you buy the movie, TV series or anime that you want to watch and then simply download it to your drive? No app, no subscription bs, no delivery, just straight money for an .mkv file and that's it?

TL:DR: Is there an equivalent to Qobuz but for visual enjoyment?

Edit: So in summary, the often repeated mantra of "piracy exists because it is more convenient than traditional services" doesn't just apply to subscription streaming services, it applies to direct digital movie purchases too. I suppose the best approach remains to split the "supporting artists" part from the "digital file getting" part, at least until a service with a modern catalogue pops up that unifies the two parts.

Chegg? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

I was looking for ways to bypass the Chegg blur. I came across this reddit thread (https://archive.is/Z4r5c#selection-2584.0-2584.1) and one of the comments read:

"There used to be a website (probably 5 years ago) that’d scrape answers when you post the link. I can’t remember the name though, but hopefully someone else here is privy to it (if it still exists)."

The comment underneath was removed by reddit, but I can't help but think that the link removed by reddit might be this website. Fuck reddit btw, glad we're in this ship now. Anyone here know which site they mentioned?

Is there something like Spotify Downloader or yt-dlp for Lidarr?

I got spotify playlists imported into Lidarr, but the artists I listen to don't seem to have any torrents.

I don't mind the quality hit of something like spotifydownloader which pulls from youtube. Is there anything like that or yt-dlp integrated into Lidarr for automated downloads?

Today I encountered something new and dystopian:

You can airplay from your iphone to an appletv but now youtube drops and locks the quality at 360p, making the content unwatchable on larger screens.

Once you disable airplay, the quality jumps back to 1080p. If you choose 1080p before and enable airiplay after, it still changes.

This hasnt been an issue for years. this new anti consumer move prompted me to order another raspberry pi to put kodi on.

I have a lot of problems with stability using the linuxserver/transmission docker image in my *arr stack. I setup restarting on unhealthy status in docker compose (using the following test command curl --fail http://localhost:9091 || exit 1) but even then, sometimes I just find that my donwloads have stopped and find that the container is not running at all. Do you have an alternative to suggest, which could run in docker compose?

I want to use my MiG switch dumper to copy a game and have me and my buddy play them at the same time.

If we both play the same one online at the same time do we risk a ban?

I noticed that previous articles about it mentioned you could actually fake certificates and make it seem like two different games were playing? Does anyone know if that's still a thing?

Its pretty much the title I'm just genuinely wondering how you guys are keeping track of all of your legally sourced files. I'm pretty much just relying on a spreadsheet but is that really the best way? Especially for the less technically inclined individuals such as myself

Edit: I apologize thought it was obvious but looking back I could've been more specific. I was referring to movies, TV shows, YouTube videos, books, audiobooks, etc. I haven't taken the leap to self host anything yet just growing my library for now on a couple of encrypted drives until the time comes. You don't really need to provide tailored answers towards my situation I just want to know what's out there in terms of keeping track of stuff. Thank you in advance since this account is a burner and I check it like once a day

Edit #2: appreciate all of your feedback. Seems the majority rely on jellyfin and other software to automatically check what you have stored which I didn't even know it could do that's interesting.
