NGL, not asking for a friend. Given the current trends in US politics, it seems prudent to at least look into it.

Most of the online content on the topic seems to be by immigration attorneys hustling ultra rich people. I'm not ultra rich. I have a job in tech, could work remotely, also have enough assets to not desperately need money if the cost of living were low enough.

I am a native English speaker, fluent enough in Spanish to survive in a Spanish speaking country. I am old, male, cis, hetero, basically asexual at this point. I am outgoing, comfortable among strangers.

What's good and bad about where you live? Would it be OK for a outsider, newcomer?

They are trying to force 2fa for stalking so I'm about to delete my account. I'm a resource mostly for a few reverse engineered hardware schematics and electronics projects. Last I checked I'm the primary English doc source for some AliEx class hardware. I don't really care enough to make a ton of effort right now. I'm certainly not in a position to pay to host or move. Is there anywhere that just works to transfer stuff with a proton email and no collector, github, com stalkerware nonsense, or verify you're identity to better market you to advertising and freedom of information manipulation trolls?

Any kind of game

EDIT: changed from suggested to mentioned and made the title more clear

Background:

I'm in my 40s and I've always sort of beaten myself up over not being an avid reader. I go through phases where I read a bunch, sometimes I'll finish a book in a months time, sometimes start a book and forget it, sometimes it seems like I go literally years without really getting into any book at all. But I still accumulate them.

Because of how important reading is and now I "fail" to prioritize it, I've always found myself in a poor relationship with reading. I feel this artificial pressure to read things that are only important and will somehow make me more useful. I feel this artificial pressure to start one book and read it to the end. I feel this artificial pressure to become a changed person by fully investing every bit of info from every book.

I've been learning that these pressures are untenable.

I've also noticed that I partake in all kinds of things without the same expectations: tv shows, games, podcasts, media and news outlets, social media, etc.

Right now I have 6 books that I am actively reading, and I am trying to remember that it's for enjoyment and not some high level goal. Someone told me if I read 10 pages a day I would finish about 10 books a year. I found this so encouraging.

Taking the pressure off of reading has really helped me get more productive at reading, and I think it will help me convert my habit into a truly fruitful one.

So now I ask you:

  • What are your reading habits like?
  • What do you like to read?
  • What kind of stage of life are you in, and how does that affect it?
  • Have you made any changes, positive or negative, to your reading habits?
  • What else?

It would be amazing if it doesn't disintegrate if it rains, too.

Someone turned 80k into like 1.2 million betting on Tesla calls or something and hedged with a Kamala win bet it was like 50k tesla/30k Kamala and they turned it into 1.2 million via Tesla somehow

Is it like

  • bet 1/2 on unlikely thing
  • bet 1/2 on likely thing
  • rely on gains on either side averaging out to at least ++

I diligently mute them, I'm a freak I cannot stand them. But from the nature of many people's complaints about ads, it seems like they listen to them and want to retain the words they've said?

I've got a couple of e-mail addresses with the main providers, but I'm looking to switch to an ad-free and more secure provider.

I've been looking at ProtonMail, but what do you guys use or recommend?

Later this month since my cellular data's almost 100% and I rely on it so super antsy until then haha.

Also next month for all my budgets to be on track and consistent going forward 🤞

I'm in the process of transitioning from my current career in teaching to the NLP career via the Python path and while I've been learning on my own for about three months now I've found it a bit too slow and wanted to see if there's a good course (described in the title) that's really worth the money and time investment and would make things easier for someone like me?

One important requirement is that (for this purpose) I've no interest in exclusively self-study courses where you are supposed to watch videos or read text on your own without ever meeting anyone in real-time.

Something about the peculiar and particular cartoon style and humor and Medieval context works for me hah

For me it would be the wise goblin man Yoda, an absolute classic jedi who spits truth and teaches the next generation about the force.

"Do or do not, there is no try" - Yoda, 1980

What about you, fellow jedi or sith, what character brings you closer to the force?

When I was growing up, these seemed to be ubiquitous and I never liked them. They seemed overcomplicated for the purpose, and created a gross and smelly area under the sink that needed more cleaning.

I haven't had one in years, as a simple sink mesh does the same job. But I don't really know how other people are. Are under sink garbage disposals still common, and commonly actually used by people here?

Tl;Dr FB sucks, looking for Android client to view friends/pages/groups posts only.

I don't like Facebook, but my main hobby community exists almost exclusively there.

I try to limit my usage to just within the bounds of my hobby, but it is difficult with all of the garbage FB tries to push in my face every time I look at it.

I would love to have a different client for FB that just gives me content on people I'm friends with. No reels, no suggestions, no ads, just friends/pages/groups.

I've seen that there are alternative FB clients for Android, but it's never clear if they offer something like what I want.

Before I spend time evaluating various clients, does anyone already know of one that does what I want?

I just learnt about the search engine Ecosia which claims to use its advertising revenue to plant trees. I was going through their website and they seem legitimate on the surface but I wanted to check if its bs or not before using it.

So what's where correct? And what else to consider at your (English speaking) place?

Consider:

  • I want that.
  • I want this, too.
  • I want the same.

I'm asking this (and that) since I participated a discussion with only native speakers and it crushed me. Apparently I am the worst English speaker anywhere.

Teach me things, Lemmy. Pleeaase!

Post scriptum: You may prepend your comment with a common, international country code to don't fuck with me too hard.

I have a couple I'd like to promote, but I don't want to intrude.

Region or country doesn't matter. Asking here as I couldn't find an equivalent to Reddit's r/namenerds community here.

My wife and I make okay money in a middle class area, but, due to a combination of good luck, and contrived to circumstances, we recently got to watch a college football game in the stadium's super executive corporate sponsor level suite. It was awesome. Open bar, amazing catered food, and people networking all around me who are clearly in the c-suite of their respective companies. I had a list of crazy things I was going to say if someone asked me what I did, but it never came up.

I'm not familiar with how they work or what kinds of data they track and return. Would they be useful to track things like plant feeder changes, cpap cleaning schedules, ant farm maintenance...

Can you think useful alternative applications and life hacks for these apps?

edit: I know that there are alternative scheduling apps for virtually any need. That's not the point. I like finding new and useful ways to use existing things.

Preferably a historic drama but open to whatever. Workplace situational comedy would be outta control but I sense a dearth of those
