You could say it comes with some threads attached.

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

LMAO, they are some clever bastards, no doubt about it.

[–] Pechente@feddit.de 57 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hmm I wonder why threads is not GDPR compliant...

[–] 1rre@discuss.tchncs.de 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thing is, GDPR also applies in the UK and CCPA applies in California where Threads is active so legally they have to delete your profile regardless of what they say in their FAQ

[–] linoor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I think they’re trying to make it like it’s not a separate app, but part of instagram.

[–] pexavc@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Curious, if EU based instances allow interoperability with Threads. Would this be a way for Meta to gather data on EU based users without GDPR compliance, even if Threads itself is not available in the EU?

[–] Pechente@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They can do this already since the content here is mostly public.

[–] pexavc@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

True, unless they may want to structure the data they'd prefer to collect maybe? If they become a primary force in this market could they impose their own "standards"? Where other instance admins would enforce locally, just to conform and grow/monetize?

[–] Exilfranke@feddit.de 31 points 1 year ago

You expect me to feel sorry for people having Instagram and Threads?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@kbin.social 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Great news! I deleted my instagram a while ago, so I'm already done.

[–] DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never had one in the first place... I really hope people wisen up and abandon both once they see it.

[–] porphyry@waveform.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They won't. At this point is this still unknown for the majority of people? Maybe I'm jaded but it seems like everyone knows they're being farmed for data but they don't care enough because fb/ig/everything these days is too convenient/addicting.

[–] DreamlandLividity@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Most people tend to dismiss things tey don't experience themselves. They don't really see the impact of data harvesting could have. Its kind of same with climate change.

[–] Jaysyn@kbin.social 29 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I've never used Facebook, & have their entire ad ecosystem blocked at my router. It's wonderful.

[–] CherenkovBlue@iusearchlinux.fyi 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Ooh how have you blocked them? Is there a specific set of addresses?

[–] Darrell_Winfield@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Running pihole here, might be something similar. I'm also curious!

[–] Sincerely_fatso@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Remindme! 24 hours

[–] Yoz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Same . Haven't seen an ad since 2017

[–] jacktherippah@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Isn't your Threads account also your Instagram account? That makes sense to me.

[–] sisyphean@programming.dev 22 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

And people are seriously considering federating with Threads if it implements ActivityPub. Things have been so crazy recently that I think If Satan existed and started a Lemmy instance, probably there would still be people arguing in good faith for federating with him.

[–] jtk@lemmy.sdf.org 27 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I would totally follow Satan.

[–] sisyphean@programming.dev 6 points 1 year ago

BTW Satan is a very cool guy, follow him on Twitter: @s8n

[–] RooRLoord420@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Right? You're going to sit there and honestly tell me you wouldn't follow the devil? Guys like Tom from MySpace, ya gotta follow him.

[–] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Satan is just like us! Cast down from the heavens to suffer in the heat.

[–] howsetheraven@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That guy who runs all the orgies, has all the drugs, and listens to hair metal rock? I'd federate with that guy 1000 times over, I don't know how he's being compared to Meta.

[–] eatisaiy@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago

idk what else you expected from meta

[–] iamsgod@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

is it supposed to be a different apps? I thought it was supposed to be a subset of Instragram from the very beginning

[–] FierroGamer@vlemmy.net 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't understand why someone would expect otherwise either

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't expect that deleting my YT and Gmail account would also get rid of my Google account.

[–] 9up999@lemmy.ml 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's one account for two thingies.

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Next genius idea, if you happen to have an account on multiple instances on the Fediverse the deletion of one will delete them all ☠️

[–] FierroGamer@vlemmy.net 2 points 1 year ago

Is that not how it works already? If you use the same account for multiple instances you don't have to delete it multiple times.

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 16 points 1 year ago

Deleting posts after a certain date on Mastodon is definitely one of my favorite features. Of course if your monetization strategy involves user data, then they'll never offer that option. Why would they want you to delete money from their pocket!

[–] normalmighty@programming.dev 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Pretty sure you use an Instagram account to login to Threads, so that makes sense.

[–] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 24 points 1 year ago

Except for the fact that they're two different things and there's no valid reason for not letting people keep one but not the other.

To many people, their Instagram account has become a big (and toxic, but that's besides the point) part of their sense of self. To delete their Instagram would be to delete a significant part of their identity. Having to do that to get rid of Threads is emotional blackmail of the worst kind.

[–] thatcasualgamingguy@lemmy.nerdcore.social 16 points 1 year ago (2 children)

By that logic you'd have to delete your Google account if you want to delete any account for which you have used Google to login.

[–] normalmighty@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

...do you not? To delete the data I mean, not just to make it appear deleted to everyone without access to the Google/Meta user database.

[–] thatcasualgamingguy@lemmy.nerdcore.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you want to delete something that is part of your Google account, then yes. Like your Gmail address. But not if you want to delete your account in an entirely different service, that only uses Google for the login. I guess the problem is, that Threads is perceived (and maybe also marketed) as an independent service while it's apparently just part of your Instagram account.

[–] normalmighty@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Might depend on who you talk to. Everyone I spoke to about it was under the same understanding that it's integrated deeply with your Instagram account.

I spun up my old burner Instagram account to check the platform out. They tell you that you can only change things like your name from Instagram, the app let's you import all other profile info from Instagram, and when you login for the first time it shows you the thread profiles of everyone you follow on Instagram and gives you a button to add them all.

It's not just an Auth method, it's the same account with the ability to change a few things between apps. Plenty of reasons to hate Threads, but this ain't it.

Ah, I see. Totally makes sense then, yeah. Haven't had the chance to have a closer look at Threads since it's not out yet in the EU.

[–] _thisdot@infosec.pub 2 points 1 year ago

Isn’t Threads a subset of Instagram? Do they not make it clear?

[–] Sneptaur@pawb.social 11 points 1 year ago

At least they’re utterly failing at the most important step of social media: the rug pull

[–] phillycodehound@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Not in the slightest.

[–] G0FuckThyself@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Glad I don't have an Instagram account.

[–] Califordnication@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I know nothing about that new app, and don’t know why I have to. But it’s funny that I hear about that only by critics in the social Fediverse.

I'm not surprised considering how much of a shit company Meta is. It feels like they cobbled this together in a few weeks. There's a good reason why it's not launching in the EU yet.
