!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Whats the best way to take action for me as a single user? What kind of posts should I focus on making? Ive heard of fetching reddit posts, maybe I could do that if theres like an easy process to do so, I'd happily feed some communities I like with posts from the silicon valley mafia platform to this platform!

Also whats the name of this platform? I registered under feddit org, is the umbrella term called fediverse? Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it? How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

Feel free to join us on !fedigrow@lemm.ee, it's the place where active posters discuss their experiences

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 2 hours ago

nice, thanks

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Don't try to mirror something from reddit. There's an instance that does that, lemmit.online, and many if not most instances have defederated because it's a blight on the land.

It's counterintuitive but making a bot to post reddit content here acqually squashes engagement here.

The best thing to do is to post content.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 35 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Don't fetch reddit posts. Just create content. Comment and upvote or downvote stuff. And hack your friends DNS so when they type in reddit they come to lemmy.

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 28 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

We’re not interested in being competition. Just a nice alternative.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 12 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

We're not? I'd love to see this take down Reddit, as miraculous as that'd be.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 13 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Most people here do not give a shit about Reddit anymore and frankly are tired of hearing about it. We really don’t want the dregs of Reddit coming over here. We got most of the good people when the API bullshit started 2 years ago, and that’s why this place is great. We don’t want to become what we left behind.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 2 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Take down Reddit ≠ turn into Reddit

[–] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 hours ago

Making the mission be about taking down Reddit gives Reddit a lot of power and credit. Focusing on making an open future for social media creates a new path forward while treating Reddit like what it is—yesterday’s platform.

There will be people who want to stick with the old platform—just look at boomers and Facebook. That’s ok—if we play our cards right, we will be gaining young users while the older demographic shrinks on Reddit.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

Yeah the thing is we don’t want that either. We just don’t care. We see these posts every time there’s a sizable Reddit emigration. I’m not shitting on you, just telling you that you won’t find a lot of interest in that topic here.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Then this place would be just as infested with bots, paid actors, corporate shills, and government agents trying to shape the narrative. No thanks.

(To be clear I'm not saying there's none of that here, there is, just not at the same scale of Reddit)

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

No one can speak for everyone else, but I personally would prefer reddit remains the main stream aggregator and lemmy can just rumble along.

I'd love to see lemmy mature and evolve and be awesome but IMO it's a mistake to think that attracting reddit users is the way to achieve that.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

True, fair! ∆ (Oops, wrong platform.)

[–] floo@retrolemmy.com 11 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

If anything takes out Reddit, it will be Reddit itself

People around here have better things to do

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 2 points 7 hours ago

I hope it ends up being flipped upside down for profit like the Meta platforms.

It's all small video posts although their essence was connecting with friends and exhibiting pictures/memory/photography. Now these use cases are actively changed into smartphone zombie habits through their UX.

I hope reddit will follow the same fate and this platform here will be the new forums-for-everyone and all the useful questions will be found through fediverse when entering your hyper specific search engine request

But currently I haven't found my communities yet and most of which are kinda inactive. Some having only a monthly post, others even none at all

I mean... I do. Doesn't mean I'm doing them, though.

More stuff that isn't memes, news and politics. Like, apparently there's two people on this whole platform watching Harley Quinn (or at least leaving a comment about it in the discussion thread). Pretty much everything that isn't memes, news or politics is still dead around here. Except for pro wrestling somehow.

What I'm still missing from Reddit is actual discussion of the forms of entertainment that I enjoy. I even tried that thread about "what music are you listening to" that pops up in casual conversation once or twice but no one gives a fuck, not even the OP of those threads bothers going through and giving an up arrow to people that have replied. And no one interacts with any replies either, so might as well be on Facebook for that kind of 'discussion'.

I'm also missing the haircare and skincare type subreddits. There were a lot of valuable resources and it was nice having a place for the occasional stupid questions. Also fashion / style type subreddits. I still think those would do great around here with LemmyNSFW mostly kept separate from everything else, so it would help keep the one handed browsers away. Although I still maintain that a big barrier for certain people in this regard is no posting to your own profile.

But yeah, there is lots and lots of stuff that this platform still needs. Memes, news and politics are the first things you'll get on every platform. Now I just wish there was more than that.

[–] Blaze@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

!WomensStuff@lazysoci.al started recently, hopefully that will help with other topics.

!Television@lemm.ee and !movies@lemm.ee are quite active, a recent thread on !movies@lemm.ee made it to 300 comments

Memes, news and politics are the first things you’ll get on every platform. Now I just wish there was more than that.

Trying to mitigate that with the pinned post on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

[–] gonzo-rand19@moist.catsweat.com 3 points 3 hours ago

"Women's Stuff" is such a fucking brain-dead name for content about skincare and hair. I'm a man, yet I also have skin and (some) hair.

Is there a community like /r/skincareaddiction? That place was (probs still is tbh) the bomb for affordable/effective products, honest product reviews, and evidence-based recommendations from cosmetologist members.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 5 hours ago

Yeah this is where I'm coming from. I ofc don't like the evolution of reddit and didn't want anything in that sense.

But the traction in casual themes seems lacking. Like ofc it will be less and smaller. But I feel like some branches are completely missing while others seem so dry.

That's the thing being a small community with a direct monopoly. The unique selling point (USP) needs to be so clear for users.

But I think we should keep repeating these posts, even if there's no traction. We are laying the ground work in that sense. And one person reacting to the fifth post is what it's all about. It's the content to be put out there.

So I think you succeeded with your music thread! It's just the expectation is on the wrong metric here, keep going. WILLYA?

That's where I'm coming from with my fetching topic. Not because I like the current reddit, but because subs like Harley quinn need stuff for browsing majority to interact with!

[–] Gieselbrecht@feddit.org 10 points 16 hours ago

Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it? How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

As this has not been answered yet: Mastodon treats lemmy-groups as users, so you can see a user @nostupidquestions@lemmy.world boosting your question on mastodon. Your profile yourself looks like any mastodon profile on mastodon. However, your post contains only the title and a link to it:

(Currently, I see no lemmy answers and boosts to your question, which I believe has to do with federation - I had to open your post by opening the link to it in mastodon, because neither this community nor your profile were "known" by my mastodon instance before).

I could now interact with your post from mastodon by replying to it, which would then show up here (usually obvious from the reply starting with tagging your username, which is how a reply on mastodon looks like).

Furthermore, you can use mastodon to post in this community by tagging the community profile (in the @nostupidquestions@lemmy.world format) in your toot. The first line of your toot is handled as the title of the lemmy post.

I have no knowledge of how federation between lemmy and pixelfed/peertube etc works, but federation between these and mastodon works pretty good - mastodon posts with pictures pretty much look like native pixelfed posts and vice versa, and peertube videos can be watched and commented easily from mastodon. The condition js that they are federated to the respective servers.

Whats the best way to take action for me as a single user?

That's a tough question, because a lot of us explicitly don't want this to become reddit, or as large as reddit (I am of this opinion myself). If you're looking for things like a community for the city you live in, I think that's far better served by creating a regional instance. Midwest.social is a good example of that, as is yall.theatl.social, an Atlanta-focused instance.

What kind of posts should I focus on making?

Whatever you want to make, the world (and the fediverse) is your oyster.

Ive heard of fetching reddit posts, maybe I could do that if theres like an easy process to do so, I’d happily feed some communities I like with posts from the silicon valley mafia platform to this platform!

Once again, a lot of us would prefer to not have that but have original content and discussions. Others may feel differently, however this is certainly my own opinion.

Also whats the name of this platform?

Lemmy. (At least for feddit.org, specifically)

I registered under feddit org, is the umbrella term called fediverse?

Yes, it is called the fediverse.

Accroding to wiki then this(fediverse) should be linked to platforms like pixelfed and mastadon too, is it?

Technically, yes, they all run on an underlying architecture called ActivityPub. Lemmy and Mastadon can see each other, but most people don't browse between them that way because of how differently they work. Lemmy posts look weird on Mastodon and vice versa. Mastodon doesn't have the same kind of threaded conversations, it's conversation trees are like Twitters. I, for example, have a different Mastodon (Sharkey) account and Lemmy account because it's easier for me to have them be separate entities even though they can technically connect. Many Lemmy instances host similar Mastodon instances, like my instance lemmy.blahaj.zone has a Mastodon instance at blahaj.zone. The aforementioned yall.theatl.social has a Mastodon instance at theatl.social.

How do I see content from them or in what way are these platforms interlinked with this reddit styled one?

That one I can't answer because I haven't tried it myself.

But here's a link I did a quick search for that seems to have instructions on how you can. I haven't tried it myself so your mileage may vary.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Thank you (and all the different responses) very much for the detailed explanations!!!

EDIT: so for extra stupid people like me: how do I differentiate between feddit and lemmy and all the subs?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Narrator: "And just like a crying baby taking it's first few breaths, and gasping for air, so to is another born into this world.....our world.

Welcome to the fediverse. The next few weeks are going to be confusing as shit......but then you'll love it. Ask all the questions you want. You now have a girlfriend. Her name is Nicole, and she's the fediverse chick! She just wants to steal all your data!

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Wait there's pretty girls? I like talking to pretty girls

EDIT: jokes aside that analogy didn't reach me, and as you prophesied I am confuseth rn

[–] lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 1 points 14 hours ago

Hah, just like my ex Facebook!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 10 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago) (1 children)

The only good thing Lemmy lacks that Reddit has are user numbers (and it's probably controversial to say that's a good thing; I know I personally don't want to see another fun place suffer from Eternal September). Tell your friends about it, get more users on Lemmy.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 6 hours ago

What User numbers are we talking? Of each sub/platform? Or like total? Because I can saw how many members a sub on feddit has for example

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 8 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

lemmy is a software platform that is the 'threads'(ie,reddit) arm of the network of servers we call the 'fediverse'. mastodon/universeodon/pixelfed are the 'microblog' (ie, twitter) arm of the fediverse. some platforms can interact with both sides.. mastodon for example can push posts into lemmy even though lemmy cannot follow mastodon users.

some platforms can do both, right now, like mbin (ex: https://moist.catsweat.com/).

some platforms are working on providing both, i believe pixelfed is adding 'thread' support sometime later.

we need users more than posts. but its a chicken and egg thing.. people wont come if theres no content and we need people for the content.

what we really need are subs from reddit moving their entire community to a lemmy/mbin community.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 2 points 6 hours ago

Exactly, that's why I what I tried saying. Chicken and egg, I want to help with both within my reach

But most that migrate won't stick unless they get a unique selling point(USP) out of it.

And I see it as a non silicon valley possessed platform, that has even more options to configure the experience to your liking(ie ui skins, at least for me there's a couple through feddit)

But also there needs to be a at least some daily posts on most subs for new people to interact with. Most just browse and if there's nothing to browse (or if it's too hidden), most will just switch back again sooner or later.

But I'm talking with a day of experience.. I still haven't seen the light of posts yet I feel like

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago

Lemmy is part of the Fediverse but if you want to get more specific you could say threadiverse to include the mbin, piefed, etc. Users.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

Share fun pictures and interesting conversation topics!

[–] ILikeMultis@lemmy.ml 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Suggest content popular in the user's region

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 5 hours ago

Region as in the @handle behind our username?

Or do you mean all the different subs by regions

[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Focus on making posts you want to discuss or would want to see in communities that interest you and you want to see active.

While I'd argue it's better to shake off the platform thinking, the simple way to put it would be that you simply refer to the site you're using, feddit.org, when mentioning it to others. The umbrella term for these connected sites is either fediverse or the open social web, whichever you prefer. Each site like this connects with one another, but given formatting differences (Pixelfed is more image-focused, Mastodon is microblogging), posts shared between them try to display in ways fitting one another's format which can sometimes look rough.

You may see content from these other sites when browsing the main feed/front page set to All, which displays content from elsewhere that others on your site (feddit.org) have subscribed to.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I see, is lemmy also a site then? I'd call mastodon/pixelfed other "platforms" (as in different content format and use focus) and lemmy/feddit "sites" (different sub owners that all can interact with each other)

Did I get this right? 😁

[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

No, sorry. To put it in your terms Lemmy would be a "platform" like how you describe Mastodon/Pixelfed.

The reason I suggested mentioning feddit.org instead is because it's what you're using and where someone else could sign up and join easily.

Mentioning Lemmy (or Mastodon/Pixelfed) doesn't tell people any site to sign up on, just what tech they're built with.

[–] arakhis_@feddit.org 1 points 2 hours ago

ahh ok thanks
