The funniest part is that the laptop has been in sleep or hibernate all that time, not off.

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 19 points 2 weeks ago

Sleep is almost off, and hibernate is just fancy off.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

How come hibernate isn’t an option anymore in windows?

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 9 points 2 weeks ago

You can still enable it, but between sleep and fast boot options it basically became obsolete.

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Hibernate was always an iffy option, so many different motherboards implemented it so differently. Light sleep is usually good enough, and has well defined wake triggers

with hybrid boot id argue its the default rn.

windows boots quickly because it sorta hibernates by default instead of actually powering off.

Only ten years old? Hell my desktop is around that age, doing just fine. I do need to get some more memory though, 16GB isn't quite cutting it for the number of programs I'm running simultaneously these days (and having 2500 open tabs in firefox doesn't help). That's the beauty of linux though, it never forces you to upgrade or chokes out your system with unwanted ads and background processes.

I have no idea what you're asking. Can you get a better data plan so you're able to transmit more than a few letters each week?

I got a new laptop last year, and now the old one is sitting next to my laser engraver, probably hoping I will never open it again but it's going to be my dedicated laser laptop now.

At least the programs I'm using on it are all 5ish years old, so it's not straining to keep up with new software.

I can still feel it heat up a lot just being idle, and I'd like to clean it up to improve it's response time.

This comic has made me feel bad for my old laptop...

Install Linux on that old gentleman and he'll be dancing the cha-cha

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

As the shaky old laptop plays it quietly passes a note along, "Can I please update?" You deny the request. The old laptop fan spins a little slower, like it was disappointed.

My almost 10 year old laptop is running proxmox. The display is busted, keyboard and touchpad doesn't work the battery only lasts for 10mins but it is still running 3VMs and 2 LXC containers. And after seeing this I feel like I'll be the first one on chopping block once robot uprising starts.

hey, you're ahead in Robot karma than if you tossed it in the trash =b

Most ten year old laptops I see are in a so great shape, that the meme doesn't really apply anymore.

πŸ˜„my 10y old macBookPro running endeavourOS can still be used for most tasks I need a PC for

Some on the Go music production, some websurfing (including using my self hosted web apps), and some coding, of course.

Still using my 2009 Dell Inspiron 11z occasionally.
