I got the warning yesterday and then nothing happened. They just threatened me and then didn't follow through.

If you are using Firefox and have ublock Origin:
Go to: tools->Add-on and themes->uBlock Origin, in the menu beside the on-off toggle choose preferences. Uncheck uBlock filters. and click apply.
Now choose a youtube video in another tab.
Go back to uBlock preferences, and enable the filters again and apply.
Now you can play video in YouTube again without commercials.

If you don't have Firefox install it, and If you don't have uBlock Origin install it.

Whenever I get this, I open the settings for uBlock Origin (click the gear icon in the Firefox extension) and manually update everything in the filter lists. Just click the clock symbol at the end of each item and it'll spin for a minute, then turn green.

After that, I completely refresh my YouTube page (Ctrl+F5 on PC; close tab and open a new tab on mobile) and it will load videos again.

Google and uBlock Origin are in an arms race, trying to one-up one another. Once you get a notice from YouTube, usually uBlock Origin has a fix for it within the day.

Tech notes for those interested: When you browse to a webpage, it stores a copy of the site on your PC, so if you go back to the site later or hit refresh on the page, it will load the local files instead of downloading the whole page from scratch again.

But if you want to force a website to load completely from scratch instead of grabbing recently cached files, hit Ctrl+F5. You need to do this to fully reload the YouTube page, it else you'll just get the notice page again.

Thanks for this wee nugget 🙏

For those that don't have the F keys handy, try Ctrl+Shift+R

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 16 points 1 day ago

In addition to all this, try clearing your Google and Youtube cookies.

Super helpful. Thanks!

So what, Google? You violate my privacy, I violate your terms of service, I'd say we're even.

I don't think they can actually have an ad blocker installed on your machine be a violation of their terms of service. It's on your device. It's like Ford would say driving one of their models with a green shirt is a violation of their terms of service. What's next, your camera will be monitored by Google and you violate their terms of service if you turn your head away whenever an ad is playing? Well, yeah, they wanted to pause ads when your eyes would turn away from the screen, so they really are that evil.

Google was such a nice company at first, now it's pure evil. Just like all the other mega corps. Open source and Piracy is the future.

After scrolling for a bit on Lemmy I saw a post that Grayjay had a desktop app now too. No need for ad blockers etc. Just use Grayjay! It's awesome! (no yt shorts cancer for example, and multi platform support so not just yt) Grayjay.app

Link to desktop version website

[–] Mwa@lemm.ee 2 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

That's so cool I might download the desktop app and maybe keep pipepipe on my phone I wanted something that isn't Electron.
Edit: Nvm its electron 🤢

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Just tried Grayjay on desktop last night. Syncing with mobile is awesome.

But on desktop, I'll continue to use freetube because i can block channels (or even content by keyword) from showing up on my feed.

If you only watch content that you're sibscribed to, then this shouldn't even be a concern.

They caught me too on Firefox!

Since Peertube is soaring to new heights with the 7.0 redesign and the app release, I would say now is a good time to switch:

Bummer. Still working in Canada, if you want to move here..

Canada is looking pretty good right about now.

Might want to think twice. The liberal party (current party in power) is falling apart, and the populist conservatives are looking like they'll win the next election with a majority unless something changes significantly.

Provincially things are not much better either: Ontario is being run by a drug pushing grifter, the prairies took a hard right into ultra conservatism, the eastern provinces are essentially majority owned by a few rich families...

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Might want to think twice. The liberal party (current party in power) is falling apart, and the populist conservatives are looking like they’ll win the next election with a majority unless something changes significantly.

You think that scares us??? We're a month away from signing trump into office.....again......

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 22 hours ago

Lol yeah, we were saying the same in the US amount the Mexican immigrants.

Turns out when you're in a dire situation, upgrading to a bad one is preferable.

[–] MrQuallzin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

My wife and I were considering it as well. It'd mean lower pay and higher housing costs. We decided to stay put for now

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Look man. Of all the reasons for me to move to Canada, better youtube playback is pretty low on my list.

If anything, I would move there because of daily gun violence, an insane society here among the general public, authoritarian laws being passed in the name of freedom, life crippling medical costs, an insane political environment, police brutality, California can best be described as "on fire" most years, and corporate ownership pf our citizens among other reasons.

But......certainly not for youtube playback.

What I'm trying to say is.......

PLEASE LET ME INTO CANADA!!!! YOUR COUNTRY SOUNDS AMAZING, ASIDE FROM THE GEESE!!!!

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 1 points 18 hours ago

I think we're only accepting goose enthusiast youtube refugees right now but, what the hell, you seem like a good egg - I'll check with the king!

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Honestly I think it's less that the geese go south for the winter, as it is they go north for the summer

If you are a little experienced and know how to deal with Docker, you could self-host Invidious yourself on your local PC or laptop. Works fine for me for multiple months.

[–] xigoi@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 day ago

Ads allow YouTube to be used by billions worldwide

They’re literally giving us more reasons to use an ad blocker.

[–] killea@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I haven't had to do much more than reload a page after getting this. Ublock, noscript, privacy badger on firefox. I think the unlock folks work long and hard at this. Makes me want to give them money.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Time to ditch youtube and find a FOSS alternative.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a mature enough FOSS video streaming platform. it turns out video hosting is really really expensive and complicated.

[–] Fitik@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I recommend trying out GrayJay, it has YouTube and it's most popular alternatives in one app, this way you can still watch folk from YouTube and support other platforms

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Thanks! I'll take a look

[–] jared@mander.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

Peertube is working on it.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Peertube exists and fills the role quite well.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I mean it exists......that part is true.

If you are a little experienced and know how to deal with Docker, you could self-host Invidious yourself on your local PC or laptop. Works fine for me for multiple months.

You'd be still using the videos of YouTube, but without their ad-flooded UI.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sponsorblock will make up for the lost time and save you even more time.

[–] lukewarm_ozone@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

People have already said how to fix this, but I'll add this different piece of advice: start using FreeTube.

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yep lots of these are popping up today. Wonder if google is going to start going hard on this.

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

[–] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Already back

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Where? Lemme VPN there and see it for myself. I'm in USA and uBlock Origin still works. (Android, Fennec)

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Seems weirdly intermittent. I just ignored it and it still seems to be working. I just couldn't play certain specific videos in certain windows. Once I opened it in a new window it seems to work, and now I know the settings I need to tweak

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago

It's account/fingerprint-based, not location. YouTube will issue you 3 of these warning messages within a certain time frame if you access the site with adblock. The third message is the one OP posted, where the video player is disabled.

Yeah I use Wipr and they hit me too.
