We're apes though.

Great ones even!

[–] Grapes@reddthat.com 5 points 6 hours ago

We're Grapes

[–] Pegajace@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Apes are monkeys, in the same sense that humans are apes.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

I'm not entirely sure that statement is correct, but it's been a while since I took any anthropology courses...

[–] Bumblefumble@lemm.ee 20 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

Family tree of primates. As you can see, old world monkeys and new world monkeys share their last common ancestor with the apes. That means that phylogenetically, that if they are both monkeys, then so are all the apes.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 4 points 9 hours ago

You are factually correct, the best kind of correct!

[–] Tyfud@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

It is correct. I've been corrected on this before and did the research to discover I was wrong. Humans are Monkeys.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 1 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, looks like I was mistaken.

[–] blackbelt352@lemmy.world 70 points 16 hours ago (4 children)

Not just hamlet but the entire body of works accredited to Shakespeare

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I thought they were written by a Klingon.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 45 points 16 hours ago (4 children)

damn, that monkey must be pretty prolific, perhaps even rivaling Shakespeare! Do we know their name?

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

At least one overly-proficient monkey.

[–] IkarusHagen2@feddit.org 17 points 16 hours ago

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

'Twas William Shakespeare, ere he found his fame!

[–] Pilon23@feddit.dk 5 points 11 hours ago

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago

Yeah and all by one monkey.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 51 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 27 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Pretty sure some other monkey did tho

[–] HKPiax@lemmy.world 14 points 15 hours ago

The monkeys are really the friends we make along the way

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

We're apes, not monkeys, though.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 7 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

We’re both. Apes are a subset of old world monkeys.

e: sorry, old, not new
