The small South Caucasus nation of Georgia has become a multi-billion dollar hub for the international used car market. The vehicles are mostly sourced from the US, and many appear to be ending up in Russia.

Nothing says superpower like importing other countries' wrecks.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Then again, it's this or a Lada.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nothing says superpower like producing Ladas.

What? I will have you know that they're the most beautiful cars ever built! And if you add a few finishing touches, you look real tough.

Real tough.

For 5k USD (if google is right), I'd drive it.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's 5k for a reason. I wouldn't want to be in one and involved in a crash.

[–] chakan2@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

In town, doing 30-45...I'll risk it. At highway speeds, probably not.

[–] jimbolauski@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm putting the percent of factory lada parts in that at 5%.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

And yet it's still really fucking ugly.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

So where do you fit the machine gun?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

In the back seat, of course.

[–] pandapoo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Did no one think to change the suspension out during the modification process?

Talk about a shitty technical.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Did no one think

They did not. They just saw a machine gun and a Lada and decided they knew what to do.

Shitty technicals are a dime a dozen, but this clearly had money, time, and skilled labor, all invested into it.

The gun turret looks decently welded to the body, possibly even the frame.

Replaced the glass on the back windows with metal for extra blast fragment and ricochet shielding. Possibly even additional steel plating for direct small arms fire protection, given how low the suspension is sitting.

Did one of the workers steal the suspension upgrade for himself? Is it designed only to be mobile long enough for it to get into position and lock itself down once the axle snaps?

Or did they blow the entire budget before realizing how fucked they were?

The front grill slides down exposing the guns, James Bond style

Pimp my Matchbox

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago

So you're saying they go from Georgia to Georgia.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Poor russians, now they have to deal with the garbage cars produced in the US.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The junked garbage cars.

Enjoy your Kia made from 4 different Kias with basic structural faults.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

From the videos I've seen, it's all Mustangs and whatever cars they hit if the crowd doesn't slow them down enough.

Holy shit I need to watch that movie again. It's unfathomable to me how he can play that character with a straight face.

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 1 month ago

It's a step up, many people are still driving shitboxes from the USSR era.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They're trying to cash in on the extended warranties.

[–] Roflmasterbigpimp@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I knew it! Extended warranties are a psyops!

[–] HerrVorragend@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I assume most don’t end up in Russia but in richer EU countries. Those cars are repaired and made presentable again in some backyard mechanic shop in Georgia and the Baltics, then thrown on the used car market.

This reminds me of the (I think several?) dudes who were selling used trucks to the middle east either directly or through a proxy with most of them being bought by the various insurgency/terrorist groups.
