If they wanted to convince me those grips are impossible, they shouldn't have demonstrated it with an anime character.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 35 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Hey now, not IMPOSSIBLE, just wrong!

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

Because in anime, nothing is impossible as long as you have the power of friendship?

[–] JayEchoRay@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I too would like learn where people can learn wrong art of the power of psychokinesis or have the wrist strength to be able to balance 3 longswords in the palm of one's hand

Joking aside, good form makes the blade effective, even more than the danger the blade presents itself

[–] HakFoo@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah. They don't tell you at all what to do with the 3rd sword.

[–] RegalPotoo@lemmy.world 42 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Over grip seems like a really great way to slice your hand open

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 93 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Swords that're meant to be able to be held with that kind of grip usually have an unsharpened bit for that purpose. Alternatively, if you're armored from head-to-toe, just make sure your gauntlets are on tight.

[–] RegalPotoo@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I suppose the point of a longsword is less "wickedly sharp razor blade to slice and dice with precision" and more "wedge shaped heavy piece of metal to drop on people with the hope of finding a gap in their armour"

[–] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

If you want slicey-dicey, get a super-sharp katana or a saber. If you want fast and pokey, get a rapier. If you want a beating stick that's 80% sharp edge, grab a broadsword.

Swords historically have a ricasso. That’s the base part of the blade, and it generally isn’t sharpened, specifically to be able to use half-swording (having one hand on the grip and one on the blade). The hand on the blade is often at like 1/3 of the blade tho. It was used to stab into weak points of an armor with precision (since swords were pretty bad against armored foes). But also, half-swording is done by "pinching" the flat of the blade betweend the palm and the fingertips, in a way that prevents touching the sharpened thread. It isn’t shown on this (very historically accurate, if i may say so) image

You can also turn it around and use it as a bonk hammer

Why didn't we ever have something that is half grip/pole and half sword? Any disadvantages to that?

Edit: right, weight of the sword on the longer grip and can't really cut with it. What was i thinking?

[–] citrusface@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

We do. It's called a Glaive, it's a polearm with a blade. Or if you mean like more 50/50 grip/sword - the Nodachi would be what you are looking for.

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Swordstaff says hi! As do nagamaki! Usually, though, it's that half-and-half is generally a bad ratio. If you can grip the sword along the blade, then why is the longer grip needed? You've got a multi-purpose grip right there in your armored hands.

Alternatively, if you have a long grip, why do you need the extra weight of a long blade? That extra weight would make any potential slashing motions unwieldy, so generally a shorter blade is preferred.

Oh, then you mean a naginata. Or a glaive. (The non-Krull kind.) A single-edged polearm.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago

Exactly, thanks.

You could cut yourself if you're not carefull, but if you do it the right way you don't risk that much.

The proper way to grab the blade of your sword, be it for half-swording as shown in the meme or to go for a mordslag, would be to put the bottom of your palm on the flat of the blade, and then wrap your fingers around the edge without touching, and holding the other side of the blade with just your fingertips. This way there is actually a space between the edge, and your hand.

You could even test this method with a kitchen knife if you want to. You'll be surprised by how actually stable this grip is.

Additionaly, even in case of "naked" combat, people often uses leather gloves which do in fact provide a fair bit of protection against accidental cuts.

That buckler, however, is not being held correctly. You hold it as far out in front of you as possible with a stiff arm. You don't sweep blows away like in dark souls.

Now I want a cute girl anime where the cute girls are HEMA nerds.

Instead of Girls & Panzer make it Girls & Zweihänder

[–] NakariLexfortaine@lemm.ee 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

If you can Raiden your sword, don't let this picture stop you.

Hold that sword with your foot. Do big spins, and swap which foot midair. You can hold a sword with your foot. You are your own master now.

[–] fogetaboutit@programming.dev 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] JayEchoRay@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That is not really fair, Raiden can do that because he must have special robotic-assisted magnets in his feet and legs.

Does Unlimited Blade Works count as psychokinesis?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Zoro would like a word.

[–] vinceman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)
[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I know why, but the thing that made me the saddest about the OP live action series is that they didn't have more 3 sword style Zoro

[–] DragonOracleIX@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Hopefully season 2 fixes that (assuming netflix doesn't cancel yet another well recieved show for more low effort slop).

[–] vinceman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

I don't know why. I haven't watched the show, but I assume anything that makes Zoro look insane would be fun on screen.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I was going to say that the right side panel basically depicts every way a sword is held in the One Piece universe.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

"Correct or wrong" is really clunky, If only there were another word that means the opposite of correct...

[–] Godnroc@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

Ah, correct VS stupid. Great point!

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

yeah, "correct or not correct" is way better

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

yes i was avoiding that word for the joke to work
