Now if Google could finally open RCS so other android apps have access, that would be great. People have only asked for 10+ years.

The feature only appears if both devices in the conversation have it.

I always thought of SMS as a bit like regular mail. (i.e. the message handed to the network with some addressing label with no feedback for the sender)

But this implies that there is some kind if handshake occurring between the devices, how does it really work?

The edit would be part of the RCS layer I assume same way read receipts and typing indicators work.

Or they do it like their e2e-encryption: proprietary extensions to RCS without any compatibility with other RCS apps (not that there's any, given it's necessary to partner with Google to do so).

No handshake needed. Just send an "edit" command for any modification. Or did I forget something ?

Can it be turned off? This isn't something I need, fast message transmission is.

it only works if you both have the 'RCS' chat option enabled within your sms app. so if you switch your rcs to off, you won't be able to edit your sent texts and senders will not be able to change messages you've received. however, rcs messages are often faster than standard sms.

This should make gaslighting my siblings easier.

"Dude I told you last week."

"No you fucking didn't!"

Quickly edit an old message

"Yes I did, check your messages from Tuesday."

Had the same idea, but it won't work:

  1. There's a 15 min edit window from the time message was sent.
  2. Edited message tag is visible

These features that have been rolling out to Beta users since November must be those with Pixel devices. Everyone else is not getting them.
