I didn’t even know it existed so they clearly need to advertise it better.

Funny. I knew all about it and saw mentions and promotions leading up to it and during it multiple times. I'm guessing some time zone displacement or something? Maybe some community separations?
Same here, I saw several announcements on Fediverse communities and elsewhere
I posted here about this exact question already, but it was very difficult to get instance admin's attention 😅
I’m an instance admin and I’ve never heard of this matrix room before. Did you try advertising it on the official matrix Space for Lemmy?
Shit. I knew about it since day one. I guess I'm spending way too much time in the fediverse.
In hindsight a smaller canvas might have made it a bit busier, but I’ll tell you what: I’m impressed the effort has been translated over from rPlace. Run this one again in a year or so and I can imagine it being way more popular.
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of white. r/place loses all the white within minutes
It's not like Reddit has over 1000x more users than Lemmy or anything
Well, that's their point. With a smaller population we want a smaller canvas.
Seems like a good balance-- big enough to not devolve into territory battles, small enough to look full in the end.
The fun thing is seeing what content is missing-- it seems like some fandoms never really migrated to the Fediverse. For me, a lack of Genshin stands out; anything this big usually gets a Fallen Qiqi out of principle.
What?? When was this? Aw, man!
When's the next one?
It was very difficult notifying people of the event, but I am planning to run another one next year!
Make sure you're in the Lemmy community (!canvas@toast.ooo) and the Matrix space so you don't miss it!
Never really followed this closely over on reddit ... but it seems like people were happy to draw stuff they found fun ... which is cool! The My LIttle Pony stuff, the Blahaj shark, star trek, diagonal rainbow, Marx, NIN, Arch Linux, a few instance tags ... all up it seems fun and like it was a success! Kudos to the people that put this together!!
Ya this is the first post I've seen about it. I'm sad I missed it.
For real what the shit man, I'm almost exclusively on lemmy nowadays and saw NOTHING about this until right now.
I'm spewing i missed this. Next time I'll be available i hope
TIL lemmy had a canvas
I was expecting the QR code to be a rick roll, but it wasn't. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Edit: There were some Rick rolls in the first 24h, my day is slightly less ruined
Carrot farmers: "It ain't much, but it's honest work"
Happy to see Canada finally figured out their flag
Wha? We had a canvas??
I think it went really well. Better than I expected.
As always, there was something new to think about, so even if I wasted a lot of time I still feel that I learned something from the experience.
I'd like to thank the Germans for not covering up our N7 logo.
I was trying to build our mascot all by myself but never got to 30% at best. Thanks to those who tried helping without any idea at first before completely screwing it up with some three-eyed monstrosity, lmao.
Thank you for organising this!
For those of you who didn't know about this, or did know and can't get enough community pixel art fun, there's an eternal canvas on https://pixelcanvas.io/ (beware: it's completely unmoderated, so prepare to see some unsavory stuff on there.
I ran a fork of pxls for this event and they have their own instance at https://pxls.space, and compared to pixelcanvas.io, is moderated (if that's what you're looking for) :)
Kinda disappointed that Nyancat wasn't at the end of that rainbow.
I love it, it's beautiful, I don't mind the white space, everyone had enough to do their own things, it was mostly peaceful, and I'm enjoying seeing my contribution (and being able to actually contribute in the first place).
Any specific reason for the special emphasis of the German flag?
Germans always do this, on r/place, too. They do make sick pixel art over there, though
I'm not German but I like it a lot. It was my favorite recurring thing on there
I can believe that it's over already. I wanted to contribute but could never find the damn page...
That seemed to be a major hiccup this time around, getting the word out there
my plan for next year's is to give 30 days and 7 day notice before the event starts
make sure you're subscribed to !canvas@toast.ooo & in the Matrix space so you don't miss it next year
Thank you for an eye-opening experience.
So many my little pony drawings! It's always cool to see this, hoping for another one next year, when the community will be bigger!
so many
Too many.
Im happy my lil BPO icon survived
First I thought “oh, Nine Inch Nails is here”, but then I saw its subtitle “c/creampies”…
Me, looking at the 6 pixels i placed until i forget about the browser tab:
I did my part!
