I my infinite wisdom I have allowed my phone that it may give me, his one and only master, his single purpose of existence, suggestions what I could have ment, when I type arrohamce. It may not change my superior writing by itself, but only show me his inferior opinion on what an alternative form of the word could be, because it definitely isn't one thing: wromg.

Agreed, l can type pefectIy fine without speIIcheck.

Edit : Mwahaha, you've activated my trap card. I've stolen your upvotes with fraudulent spelling. Those i's up there are actually L's, and the L's are i's! I am a master upvote criminal.

Heist completed.

I prefer to call it autoassume.

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I call him digital opinionist.

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Fair....his opinion is stupid though

[–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

like most opinionist 💁‍♂️

That's, like, your opinion, man

Friend of mine calls Siri "Sorry" because it gets so many things wrong. 😂

[–] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

HA! That's perfect!

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 22 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Anyone else doesn't use autocorrect??

[–] devfuuu@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (3 children)

First thing to turn off on the keyboards. That and the swipe bullshit.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The irony is I've been using swipe since the beginning and I love it. It's like the t9word system we had on flip phones

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've been a swiper since "Swype" keyboard! I think its gotten noticably worse on Google's keyboard over the last few years though :/

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

I blame that on tech companies creaming their panties over AI and forcing its implementation where it doesn't belong

[–] Persen@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (7 children)

Does anyone actually swipe on their phone keyboards? How the hell does it even work?

[–] OR3X@lemm.ee 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I use it almost exclusively on Gboard. Works well when you get used to it and in combination with the suggestions at the top of the keyboard it's faster than manually typing. Not sure how it fares on iOS though.

[–] Persen@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago

Well if I know correctly, gboard is also compatible with ios, so it can work the same way.

[–] SavoryBaconStrip@lemmy.ml 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I swipe about 90% of the time, but it's so frustrating sometimes. It'll occasionally give me the wrong word. I'll delete the word and slow down my strokes, ensuring I stop at each specific letter, and it'll give me the same wrong word every time that doesn't even make sense in the sentence context. When it works, it's great though.

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

That is the worst fucking part. I try to swipe "for" and get "got" and then I very deliberately swipe "for" and get "got" again. 🤬

It's like, you just typed "got" so now it's high in the "words you type" list or something.

It's just BSD at short words. Yes, BSD. I definitely didn't try to swipe bad.

I think the QWERTY keyboard is not ideal for swiping. One of the worst things when swiping is having I and O so close together.

[–] psud@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I use it and find it's the fastest way to type on glass

It appears to work by matching the path your finger traces to likely words, it also works if you're slightly off the letters

The biggest problems are errors like "if" and "of" that start right next to each other and finish the same, it also capitalises anything that is also a name and you need to select the uncapitalised version from the suggestions row

[–] Persen@lemmy.world -3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

If I understand correctly, you slide your finger on the letters instead of pressing and it is somehow faster, but I don't understand how.

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Try it and stop commenting about it until you do. If it's not faster for you, then it's not faster for you. Or go watch a YouTube video about it.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

My friend once told me he wqs practicing swiping to type once

[–] the_grass_trainer@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

I use swipe sometimes, but every now and then it refuses to type something simple. So i hardly use that feature.

[–] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 4 points 7 months ago

I swipe a lot in Russian because I learned it late in life and am horrible at writing things correctly. So I swipe across the most likely letters and then usually get the correct word out of suggested.

[–] hex@programming.dev 2 points 7 months ago

I use it a lot it's pretty useful

[–] devfuuu@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I've tried 2 or 3 times, but there was nothing explaining how it worked and what I tried did nothing useful. It just seems stupid.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You just drag your finger to all the letters in the word you're trying to spell. If you need two of the same letter you just do a little loop while going over that letter.

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Wed erred eee wed erred erred erred erred erred weed.

I had to do like 3 loopty-loops on E to get it to type weed. It really doesn't like that word.

Edit: turns out that pausing on the E for 1 second works better than a loop. Weed.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yeah there's a lot of censorship shit you have to work around. It used to be a lot better before tech companies switched from simple proved to work algorithms to bullshit "ai"

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I don't think it has anything to do with censorship and the swipe library doesn't use AI. It's just a very ambiguous swipe near very common letters.

On a hunch, I tried simply holding for 1 second on the E. It seems to work a lot better than a loop. You can even see the hovering word change from "we" to "wee" while paused on the E.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I say it's censorship because I've noticed "dirty" words almost always need to be typed out letter by letter but I can swipe for 90% of the other words I want to use.

I can use swipe to spell hypothalamus but can't use it to say fuck without typing it in over and over or deliberately adding it to my phones dictionary.

[–] CrayonRosary@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Right, but weed is a perfectly ordinary word and I've typed it on my KB many times before recently trying to swipe it.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Eternally trapped between my thumbs simply being too big for autocorrect to not be useful and autocorrect's training data being generated by illiterate and prudish yet self-sure monkeys

[–] kibiz0r@midwest.social 19 points 7 months ago (2 children)

First thing I do with a new device (or app that has its own settings) is disable anything that fucks with my text input.

  • Autocorrect
  • Predictive text
  • Text replacement
  • Spellcheck

Language is a dynamic thing, and it’s the main way we express our individual perspectives to each other. It’s the very last thing I would ever want to autotune about myself.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

exactly, after a while you learn to type fast without (many) mistakes

[–] force@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Don't forget the automatic capitalization and auto-spacing

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 7 months ago

~~Duck~~ Fuck off autocorrect, I know what I mean better than you, and you, as a mere slave, have no right to tell me what how too rite.

I feel like it's gotten significantly worse (on Android at least). I remember when I taught it a word or corrected often enough, it would learn I use that word frequently

Now, it keeps trying to capitalize random words and turn them into acronyms out of nowhere

It's cool that it has rudimentary grammar checking now - it's very hit or miss but still useful. Not worth the trade off though

[–] FarFarAway@startrek.website 1 points 7 months ago

I just had to do a reset. The ui on my phone just got a couple of updates and it all went downhill from there.

It started capitalizing random letters in the middle of words and turning correctly spelled words into garbage, over and over again.

I turned off suggestions after a few of those
