Looking mindlessly at my phone and scrolling through pointless posts puts me to sleep significantly faster than laying still listening to whatever thoughts and concerns my brain conjures up.

This hits hard for me. There have been too many nights where I am just lying in bed with my mind racing. I've tried breathing techniques, meditation, the whole book. Doesn't work for me, and I am left with taking delayed release melatonin pills.

I've started listening to audio books. I usually only make it about 15-20 mins before I fall asleep.

Have you tried listening to meditations? I wasn’t sure if you were talking about self guided or not.

I sometimes find listening to a 30 minute guided meditation knocks me out. It’s like giving my brain permission to turn off.

I was raised in a buddhist family, so I tried following what I learnt in terms of meditation. It's been a while, I might try that again.

This is definitely the way for me too. In fact, in the rare instances when I don’t have internet, I have a hard time settling without my habitual mindless scrolling before sleep.

This also works for me sometimes

Can't let the brain free-wheel

Same with my GF. Can't really argue with the results.

It works for me...

I'm glad I take Ambien and have to hide my phone from myself at night or I become my own Secret Santa. I sleep better.

Read books you goobers. Puts me to sleep faster than anything.

You're not wrong. Then I just feel bad, because I never finish a book since now I've trained myself to fall asleep after two pages no matter what time of day it is.

[–] radix@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

That's super funny. I'm scared of that happening to me.

Damn I feel this. We conditioned ourselves.

[–] Tehgingey@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

Honestly, it's more about the noise for me, I need some sort of background noise to fall asleep. Mindless let's plays are my go to, a game I've played and cherish so I don't need to focus on, but helps me be comfortable and fall asleep

[–] GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

If you've been unable to sleep for a while, the best advice I've ever been given is to leave the bed for at least 15 minutes. What I usually do is go to my living room, lie on the sofa and read a book or something. After around 15 minutes I go back to bed and give sleep a try.

It never works out to lie sleepless for extended periods in bed, so just accept the fact of your sleeplessness and do something else for a while.

Every time: β€œLet me just pick it up real quick to start my… oh look at all these notifications and new posts…” 2 hours later β€œok now for some bedtime music.. why am I so tired?”

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

Are you spying on me?

[–] Mercival@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Once I take my evening pills, I literally stare into my phone until I drop dead.

It's really weird when you fall asleep with your phone in your hand, and your hand suddenly relaxes making the phone flop onto you waking you up.

[–] MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I had this exact thought right before I scrolled to it. Depending on my brain, I can either lay and go dead sleep, or if I'm racing ill pick up the phone or whatever. I just took my blind cat out to chase moths and I'm not in the mood to sleep. Maybe in a few min. -lemmy addiction

I once made the mistake of trying to do a few sketches. a tax return and 4 hours later I finally slept

[–] ItsABarmcake@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Why you calling me out like that

[–] NosyRock@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

My friend does this with her kids when they can't sleep but then also gives them melatonin so it probably evens it out eeee

[–] SSX@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Turn on your phones red light/eye comfort shield. If you can enable an extra dim setting do that too. Go watch some relaxing videos, I prefer accidental ASMR videos and then I'm out.

For me, reading a book or manga on my phone (tablet too heavy) works wonders.
