Which gadget makes your life better?

For me, it's a bidet toilet seat. I bought one that didn't really fit as well as I hoped, so now I am shopping for a v2 based on experience. I don't want to live without one going forward. That's for sure.

Electric toothbrush, I feel so cleeeeaaaaan!!

[–] vaseline@lemmy.fmhy.ml 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I feel you. Can't believe I was brushing manually like a caveman all this time.

[–] weew@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago

don't even need the fancy ones. AA battery powered one costs $10 and performs just the same as the $300 Bluetooth enabled social-media-linked brush with a 3 year BrushPro app subscription (wow! a $240 value! Buy today!)

Laser thermometer. I learned a lot about better temperatures at which to cook things and now get more repeatable results when cooking.

Kitchen scale. Recipes are easier to prepare when weighing ingredients as opposed to using measuring spoons and cups.

Both make food a better experience, which leads to more satisfactory meals and eating less overall.

[–] obi_one@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Do you have a meat thermometer?

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

Yeah a laser is not that great, an instant read probe is what he needs.

I love my thermapen

A laser isn't going to get you an accurate reading of what the inside of the meat is: Get yourself a meat thermometer instead.

Pretty sure he means the surface temp of where he’s about to put the food to cook.

Use the laser to see how hot the cast iron is before putting the meat on. Or how hot the oil is before deep frying. The laser thermometers are good for that.

[–] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For the pan, not the meat.

[–] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh, that makes way more sense!

[–] jbrains@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago

I didn't even think of the alternative understanding until you replied. Oops.

[–] justhach@lemmy.world 26 points 1 year ago (3 children)

My Aeropress. Great quality, espresso-adjacent coffee quickly and easily in the morning.

[–] Helvedeshunden@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

@justhach I could have picked Aeropress as well. After too much of it, though, the bidet comes in handy once again!

[–] thewinn@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Love my aeropress, really changed how I make/enjoy coffee

[–] Stardust@kbin.social 22 points 1 year ago (2 children)

@Helvedeshunden

Obvious answer: computers.

I wish we got a bidet but my family decided against it. x_x

[–] Chrisosaur@startrek.website 13 points 1 year ago

Bidet attachments are like $50–100 on amazon, installable with very little know-how, and your family is under no obligation to use it.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 year ago

I got 2 bidets from tushy. Super easy to install and now I despise shitting away from home. I'm so much more clean using water instead of a piece of (toilet) paper.

If you want to try to convince your family then look up that Pulp Fiction scene when Samuel L Jackson explains that if a piece of shit was on your (face) cheek then you'd probably want something more than a piece of paper to clean it up. He obviously explains it better.

Or just buy it and install it without them. They don't have to use it and your booty will thank you.

My cordless drill. I didn't think I'd need one because I never did a lot of things that required me to drill or screw things together. But now that I have it I can't go back. I've found so many uses. I'd definitely recommend getting a nice driver bit set with one, if you ever put together furniture from a store like Ikea, a nice hex bit makes it go so much faster.

[–] erre@programming.dev 4 points 1 year ago

To add to this, there's nice multi function ones. I have the Black and Decker Matrix drill (cordless and corded) with several attachments. I don't do a ton of maintenance nor professional projects and it's been a huge life (and storage) saver. Super convenient.

Smart vacuum cleaner. You buy it once and never have to vacuum again.

[–] Szymon@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You don't need a fancy vacuum to never vacuum again. We have a cheap one and never vacuum either.

[–] erre@programming.dev 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

While true, smart ones add even more convenience. Scheduling, room selection, object avoidance, etc.

[–] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think he's joking that they just don't clean their house.

An added value of smart vacuum is just that it simply does the cleaning regulary without slacking so there's overall less dust in the apartment hence you not only don't have to vacuum but also dusting off furniture etc. is required less frequently.

[–] erre@programming.dev 5 points 1 year ago

It seems I need to read things twice before replying πŸ˜…

[–] Lewistrick@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

Looking forward to having one in a new house where the surfaces actually join instead of having bumps everywhere.

+1 on the bidet. Got one during the great TP shortages of the pandemic πŸ˜„ Now I despise going to the bathroom anywhere but home. Unclean! Uncleaaaaan!

[–] floral_toxicity@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

A pocket knife. Carried one for most of my life at this point.

Also an all metal pen. I always have a writing utensil with me that rugged enough to last years in my pocket.

See you over at c/EDC

[–] lemmy_nightmare@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

How does a pocket knife make your life better?

Opening boxes, cutting zip ties, picking stuff from under my fingernails, splinters, etc. All kinds of uses.

[–] Quintus@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not necessarily better but safer I suppose. I've been thinking of getting one aswell.

Oh yes, then I agree. I too hide a well made box cutter in my travel bag and car at all times.

  • A Bluetooth audio DAC/amp. Connects to my phone. And I can use whatever wired set of earphones I want. Light gardening: earbuds. In public transport: over/on ears. And if the DAC dies, I get to keep my earphones and just replace the DAC.
  • My Steam Deck

I am traveling with my Steam Deck right now. Best purchase I made this year!

A multitool or swiss army knife: I recommend a Leatherman or Victorinox fit to whatever your daily needs are.

Personally, I swear by my Leatherman Skeletool CX in my pocket and a Victorinox Midnight Manager on my keychain.

recently got my old psp fixed up, it's made my family's near constant outings significantly more bearable. tried emulating it a while back on my phone but it just didn't feel right using touch.

[–] TARDISblueFoz@feddit.uk 3 points 1 year ago

Should try a razer kishi or Gamesir controllers that attach to your phone. I have the Gamesir V2 Pro and is a good bit of kit.

A Samsung T5 1TB SSD. Has allowed me to comfortably have what I need all the time as I work and study.

Not really a gadget but tools in my car, countless times people or even I’ve needed them and because I carry them around with me in my car it’s been a life saver and a small electric drill to make it easier instead of using a rachet or screw driver

[–] SiriusCybernetics@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Harmony remote control. Even controls my air conditioner.

Garlic press is my second choice. 😎

[–] eendjes@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

A set of water pump wrenches. I’ve used them for all kinds of purposes that aren’t water pumps. They grip most things and allow a lotta torque.

Kindle.

I read a lot. I used to always keep a paperback book with me ever since I was a teenager. My Kindle goes everywhere with me, since I got my first one in 2009. I just wish they'd make them smaller, the first Oasis was the perfect size for carrying around all the time (I'm a guy, no purse).

Single-Board Computers (Raspberry Pi, Odroid, etc). I can't stress how much these have improved my life. Whether it's a simple PiHole filtering out ads, or my Predator Deterrent system for my Chickens, they've made life much easier.

[–] sapetoku@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

My Instant Pot. I'm the cook at home and it saves me so much time and food comes out so good I barely use my stovetop anymore. Same with the air fryer. Between both kitchen gadgets, I can make a tremendous meal for 4 in 30 minutes. It has saved me weeks!

[–] szczur@szmer.info 1 points 1 year ago

My Victorinox SAK (model Tinker Deluxe) it just comes in handy so often and I'm glad I've got it around.
