QKSMS has been great over the past year and change I've used it. Simple, clean and customizable. Simple SMS Messenger is another solid option as well.
RCS, while a solid concept, was never adopted in a major way. It seems like only the Samsung and Google messengers have RCS functionality. I use Signal for encrypted messaging, just wish more folks I know used it regularly.
Might be a UK thing but I despise rcs so many damn times I sent a message only to be told days later it couldn't be delivered. In my mind it's inferior to sms because at least that's gets there pretty instantly.
