I've been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the 90s?
This is the closest I've got to that feeling, yeah. Only difference is now I'm not a teenager and not that bothered about your asl.

Can somebody translate that into zoomer for me? I am only technically a 90s kid and missed all of this
You'd just fire off an "ASL" to someone... It meant "age, sex, location". And then you'd decide to get on with a conversation or not. ICQ (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICQ) was an instant messaging program and had some super delightful sound FX for different things. I remember having an ICQ number (member ID) under 11k and it was cool somehow...
That sounds like a good way for the murderers to find out where I live
