I'm relatively new to the linux space, I was introduced by the steam deck which uses kde, and it's pretty similar to windows in terms of how it works so that's the DE i'd be leaning towards when I eventually switch. I've never used gnome so i'm not sure if it'd be worth using I guess?

So I'm just looking for some input from the community, do you use Gnome or Plasma, why do you use it, and what's kind of like a pros and cons kinda thing between the two?

My laptop is my workstation, and find myself fairly regularly having to switch between display layouts.

I wrote this script to work in conjunction with arandr generated xrandr layouts that are slightly, manually modified to also use xwallpaper to set per-layout wallpapers.

Also included is a systemd service that loads the previously chosen config at startup.

There's a little more info in the root README, as well as the most recent commit, for a deeper dive.

Can he? What would he be able to take and leave? What would that do to Linux?
This question has been on my mind for a long time, but never got around to asking it.

It should be that if i close the laptop and leave it, even overnight, it should only lose maybe 5% battery, but it actually loses all of it, as if it was on (it gets maybe 5 hrs of battery life)

I have it set to sleep after 5 minutes. What sorts of logs should I check to diagnose the problem?

I remember a story where people asked about blobs included in Ventoy and there were no comments from the devs, leading to suspicion.

At the time it wasn't clear to me if there was any substance to the story or if it was the usual Internet exaggeration, so I resolved to ignore it for the time being and saved a reminder to look into it after a while.

Now my reminder fired off and I looked around, but couldn't find how the story ended... do you know?

Around a year ago my grandparents asked me to update their computers to Windows 10. One from 7 and one from 8.1. I couldn't update from 7 to 10 so I just reinstalled directly to 10. The license was lost but grandfather didn't mind that "activate windows". And for office I installed libreoffice (or onlyoffice, I dont remember). On 7 he was using Chrome so I installed him Brave, which is similar enough and has an adblocker. He never complained about anything... until now.

Both grantfather and grandmother on the same day they got some notification (probably fullscreen, otherwise they wouldn't even told me) about end of 10 and that they should upgrade. So I told them Windows 10 support is ending in about a year. I gave them 3 options:

1. Buy a new computer for windows 11
2. Use windows 10 without updates - more likely to be hacked.
3. Try linux. As soon as I said "Linux" my grandfatger said: "Linux, thats something... lightweight... right?". I'm a gentoo user and I forced my brother and sister to install linux but I never mentiond a word to my grandparents. I have no idea where he heard that. But I'm happy he did!

So the main question: What distro? I'm thinking of Fedora with Gnome. Something stable, modern, secure, and simple. Gnome is different, I know, but I also think Gnome is the simplest. Should I go with Silverblue or normal version? I will also definitely install rustdesk and make backups of windows. And I will first try liveusb so they can decide if they like gnome.

Edit: I'm currently trying to liveboot linux. I rebooted the computer and windows started updating...

Edit: I livebooted Fedora and Mint DE, they said they like Mint more so I installed Mint. Grandfather's scanner and printer were detected out of the box with preinstalled apps, ptinter sadlly doesn't work but that was also with windows - probably hardware failed. Now I'm Installing Brave for grandfather and uBlock Origin for firefox for grandmother. Everything good so far!

Hi, I'm wondering if dnf or rpm-ostree (from what I understand, a dnf wrapper) does handle updating firmware drivers? I've uninstalled gnome-software and now I don't know if I should update firmware with some other command, or does the "rpm-ostree update" command do it?

I am thinking of buying a relatively cheap laptop that is reasonably powerful. I am at loss when it comes to new CPU naming and its compatibility with Linux (from both Intel/AMD). I prefer Ryzen 5 or Core 5 above with atleast 16GB RAM.

Framework laptops are not available where I live.

I saw some Reddit posts claiming AMD being not optimized for Linux particularly for arch related distros (I use EndeavourOS). I am thinking of buying a Thinkbook from Lenovo, but confused b/w team blue & red.

Which of these CPUs are better for running Linux long-term with respect to optimizations, power management, thermals, track pad support etc. If anyone has a laptop recommendation, please feel free to comment down below.

Also, should I go for a high end Laptop like Asus Zenbook S14? A lot of reviews are picking it as the best compact laptop to buy this year. Its expensive. But if it keeps working for a long time, like 6+ years, then I don't mind investing.

Edit: I use Gnome as my DE with EndeavourOS, but can also try Debian 12 with Gnome.

Hi Does any of you use this mouse on their Linux machine. Apparently its pretty good mouse other than the fact that software is atrocius and you cant change RGB howewer you want or configure dps and deafult rgb setting apparently suck. Buuut obviusly i wont be using windows software on linux but probably piper or whatewer else i can find . So my question is does linux fix the flaws of that mice or perhaps quite the opposite ? How do gaming mouses even work on linux in general ?

I'm trying to find a higher paying job and I came across one for a "Syslog-ng Admin/Engineer." The pay seems promising and the requirements aren't that long but does ask for experience in syslog-ng. I've never heard of this before today. What is syslog-ng and what can I do to get experience with it?
