Hopefully I'm not the only one but, whenever I'm looking for a cache I feel real weird and stop if anyone else is in the area like I'm afraid. I'm a grown adult and a veteran but I start feeling like a kid trying to hide what I'm doing.

The oldest cache in NYC, 4quA5 (GC12AF), got archived yesterday. It was originally hidden July 26, 2001; scrolling through the logs, you can see that it was a notoriously difficult hide.

I never got the chance to hunt for it and I'm sad I might not get to now. I have a sneaking suspicion it's still there, but I could be wrong. Frustratingly enough, there was a throw down placed a few days before it was archived 😐.

It hurts my little cacher heart to see these OG caches slowly disappear!

And I'm super stoked for it to get posted!

It's an magnetic bolt under a bench in a park.

Where I live there are a tonne of caches but a bunch of the areas and parks I frequent seem to be cache deserts. I plan to fix this! Picked up an bunch of magnetic micros and plan to slang then out around town after the first one is authenticated.

Woo!

Happy cacheing everyone!

There’s an older guy in my area who’s in his 70’s and he constantly gets upset with me when he DNF’s one of my caches and gets even more upset when it takes me a few days to do the maintenance. I’m only available to do maintenance on weekends because during the week, I’m just too busy with work and that get him very upset and frustrated. He literally expects me to drop all of my responsibilities, the nanosecond he wants to find any particular cache I own that he’s struggling with. Also I am very on top of keeping my caches in good condition and I do go and check on them as soon as I can whenever an issue is brought to my attention. Other geocachers in my area say they understand where I’m coming from but I should try to harder to do the maintenance for this guy when he’s requesting it because geocaching is his main way of staying active and healthy. Him and some others think I’m not being a good community member by only doing maintenance on weekends and me saying my responsibilities outside of the game is just an excuse and I’m being a “lazy CO.” It’s getting to the point that I’m frustrated with their lack of patience that I’m thinking I’m just going to archive everything I own except for a few of my very well liked caches and no longer hide anything.

What are some of the necessary items you take when caching? I always make sure to have a pen but I'm thinking of adding a small "go bag" to my car. Pen, spare pencils, extra logs, flashlight, extendable magnet, trade trinkets. Anything you think are good to add or subtract?

The other day I went after a geocache that was at the end of an unpaved, grassy service road behind a locked gate. There were no “no-trespassing” signs, and I parked my car on the paved road right before the grassy road.

So I get there, find the cache, and as I’m writing in the log book, I thought to myself, “gosh, why does somebody have to be mowing their lawn right now when I just so happen to be here?”

To my surprise, it was what I assume is the land owner, on his riding mower, going out to see what I was doing. I was a bit back in the woods but he could see me, so I waved and he waved back. I put the cache away, walked up to the road, gave him a “hi good morning” and he said hi back. Then I walked back to my car.

The neighbor who was putting out the trash on the road when I parked totally snitched on me to the neighbor! Who then got on his riding mower to see what riffraff I was up to lol.

Has anyone else had a property owner come out and see what you were doing? I’m just some white girl in a sweater and leggings so I put out a very “no threat here” vibes. I thought it was funny but I wonder if I’m alone in experiencing this?

Edit: I only recently paid the subscription fee, but I’ve gone after free public caches in the past. This was my first one since paying for the app.
