26yo Christian here who's been reading and researching about Armenian history, culture, and people since 2021. I have visited a few Armenian places too. I am doing this as a passion and genuine interest to learn more about Armenia, and not as part of any academic project.

Would any Armenian be interested in exchanging messages over Reddit and giving me a deep insight about Armenia?

Day 2: Pashinyan rode a bicycle in Moscow before congratulating Putin on his birthday and gently whispering into his ear that he needs to gradually get the hell out of Armenia

Day 1 coverage of CIS summit in Monday report. As you recall, the Armenian leaders refused to sign under Putin's anti-West statements adopted by the CIS, and there will be no AM-AZ negotiations in Moscow.

... Pashinyan administration continues to reduce Russian presence on Armenia's borders

According to the latest agreement reached between Pashinyan and Putin in Moscow, starting 1 January 2025:

• Armenian Border Guard troops will fully replace Russian Border Service agents at the border checkpoint with Iran. The service at the checkpoint will be carried out exclusively by Armenian agents. This is the area where people cross the border and where the passports and cargo are checked, confirmed a ranking ruling party MP.

• Elsewhere, Armenian agents will join Russians and participate in the protection of Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Turkey state borders. This is outside of checkpoints.

• In the "goodbye" message, Pashinyan thanked Russian border agents for their help after the 1991 independence.

• Pashinyan gifted the Crossroads of Peace communication project brochure to Putin. Context: Russia and Azerbaijan have been attempting to extort an exclusively-Russian-controlled corridor passing through Syunik, while Pashinyan is promoting an Armenian-controlled trade route as part of the "Crossroads of Peace" project. Instead of increasing Russian presence in Syunik, Pashinyan began to remove them from Armenia, with their withdrawal from the AM-AZ border and Yerevan airport earlier, and now from the Syunik checkpoint.

During the meeting in Moscow, Pashinyan expressed concerns regarding the "terminology and vocabulary" used by certain Russian officials concerning regional matters.

PASHINYAN: Armenia is ready to fully ensure the safety of the passage of goods, vehicles, and people through its territory. Any statement that Armenia has somehow agreed that third countries [Russia] will ensure the security of communication is not true. //

"Ապրեք, սպասում ենք հաջորդ ինքնիշխան քայլերին," Armenia's pro-West politicians respond with satisfaction to the removal of Russian agents from Iran checkpoint.

Pashinyan allies and pro-West politicians criticize former mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan for jokingly displaying Armenia without Syunik during a theatrical performance

Marutyan is back to acting. Not everyone was happy with his latest stunt. An official from Pashinyan's office said Marutyan has failed to mature into a serious political figure.

Ruling and party MPs and some pro-West faction members accused Marutyan of acting as Aliyev's speaker in Armenia: "Հուսամ հաջորդ ներկայացումը չի լինի գուբերնիա դարձած Հայաստանի մասին համապատասխան դրոշով", "Սա երգիծանք և հումոր չէ, սա հակապետական քաղաքականություն է քողարկված ժպիտի և ծափահարությունների ներքո:"

furries are invading Russia, as the issue becomes a topic of international discussion

A few weeks ago an adult reprimanded a child for wearing cat outfit in Russia. A popular blogger, hated by Putin's allies, came in defense of the child. The pro-Putin camp naturally had to adopt a stance against the blogger, so they joined the anti-furry camp. Thus a culture war began in Russia.

These furries terrorize Soviet-born babushkas who can not comprehend how someone can be a cat. The idiot children, they say, are peeing like dogs in condo elevators and acting erratically while role-playing.

Russian parliament MPs proposed banning the furry movement or its propaganda altogether. No sign of that actually happening yet.

During the Armenian government's Moscow visit this week, Russian FM Lavrov asked Armenian FM Mirzoyan jokingly if Armenia also has furries. Mirzoyan said he has heard of this "new movement". It's unclear if Lavrov was making fun of Mirzoyan's bushy beard.

Armenia continues to press Azerbaijan to sign a peace agreement based on the 13 already-approved articles

YEREVAN: Azerbaijan itself has territorial demands against Armenia and is simply trying to create a smokescreen with false accusations about Armenia's Constitution containing territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

The Armenian Constitutional Court’s decision very clearly says that only the provisions of the 1990 Armenian Declaration of Independence that are expressed verbatim in the Armenian Constitution’s articles have constitutional power.

And therefore, it is not possible to attribute something to the Constitution that’s not written in the Constitution’s text that follows the preamble, meaning in the Constitution’s articles, and there simply is no place for any other interpretation, especially when the high court recorded that its previous decisions never recorded any other stance. Thus, the Armenian statehood’s fundamental principles and national goals mentioned in the preamble of the Armenian Constitution are those that are expressed in the subsequent text of the Constitution, and it contains nothing that is possible to interpret as a territorial demand directed against any country.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry should answer the following questions:

• Is Azerbaijan planning aggression against Armenia?

• Is Azerbaijan refusing to recognize the territorial integrity of Armenia?

• Is Azerbaijan abandoning the peace agenda?

Baku’s aggressive rhetoric and refusal to sign the peace treaty that includes the agreed-upon articles have made many Armenian and international experts conclude that Azerbaijan will use COP-29 to create a smokescreen for attempting to legitimize its future escalation of the situation.

Many analysts believe that ruling out a military escalation requires the signing of the agreed-upon content of the peace treaty ahead of COP-29, otherwise the leaders heading to Baku can unwittingly become instigators of war. Armenia is ready to sign the peace treaty ahead of COP-29. //

Georgia's pro-West opposition parties are poised to win a majority in upcoming parliamentary elections: analyst

GEORGI TUMASYAN (analyst, Tbilisi): The more recent surveys show a very positive trend for opposition forces. The latest survey by Edison Research indicates that the pro-West factions will win a majority and receive the opportunity to form a coalition.

The survey places the ruling Georgian Dream at 30%. During the previous elections, before they switched their foreign policy direction and became more authoritarian, they had 48% of the vote.

According to reports, [pro-West] President Salome Zurabishvili has already chosen the opposition's candidate for PM. There is a chance that this candidate could be rejected and the forces could nominate Zurabishvili herself to serve as a temporary PM.

The Georgian Dream's decision to launch an impeachment process against President Zurabishvili gives weight to the arguments that the ruling party doesn't want Eurointegration. Zurabishvili recently met Macron and other EU leaders to discuss Georgia's EU accession. //

... who are the political parties competing in Georgian elections?

(1)

GEORGIAN DREAM: incumbents, anti-West

(2)

UNITED NATIONAL MOVEMENT: pro-West, Mikheil Saakashvili's party joined by several smaller groups. Saakashvili has a high personal disapproval rating due to screwups in his last years.

EUROPEAN GEORGIA: Former UNM folks who split from the party for their dislike of Saakashvili. Lately they became pro-UNM, a possible coalition ally.

(3)

COALITION FOR CHANGE: anti-Russia, former UNM folks, appeal to urban liberal voters and libertarians, "stealing" votes from UNM,

(4)

STRONG GEORGIA ALLIANCE: pro-West, civil society and activist folks, liberal voters, voters who dislike both Saakashvili and Bidzina Ivanishvili

(5)

ALLIANCE of PATRIOTS: pro-Russia, far-right, elder voter base, they are angry that the ruling party is stealing the spotlight as the new pro-Russia party, they want to be viewed as the REAL conservatives and anti-West, the ruling party has a complicated relationship with them

(6)

There are several figures and parties running separately. President Zurabishvili is playing her own game.

Since the last post got a lot of attention I got to work right away. I decided to write an email to the old ministry of diaspora bc they previously provided help for Armenians in Jerusalem to return (I think it was Jerusalem but Im not sure anymore). Unfortunately I got no response back.

I would like to help organise it but will need extremely much help from specialists and volunteers.

Before we do this I would like to ask Lebanese Armenians if you think people will use the opportunity to get out of the country or not. This question should be answered by Lebanese Armenians that live or just moved out of Lebanon.

I went to Armenia first time in my life 2 weeks ago and I returned back yesterday. I really enjoyed it way more than I expected it to. I already knew what beauties it has and all the positives, but it is way different when you see it yourself. So I wanted to ask the other Armenians of the diaspora, what opinion did you have when you first visited Armenia?
